I love metal, but that song fucking blows.
It does have sweep picking in it.

I agree. I think sweep picking on bass is a little silly. Sure you can do it but I think it's very wanky. Too much masturbation, and I masturbate on bass a lot.

yeah, i know
i mean the fantastic thing is that we have a thread about sweeps that's mostly about Chat Atkins
that's so tasteful
but SOMEONE ASKED AND I HAD TO DO THIS
that being said - i don't know of any song with bass sweeps in it that's good or tasteful

That's sort of my feeling, too. If the riff doesn't sound "musical" when you play it in half time, its probably just noodling. Of course, the whole point of a sweep is that it sounds like a sweep/video game-y, and that's not really my jam when it comes to bass.

What if "good sweeping" was used as it's own composition element?

Seems pretty clear to me that something written as a sweep was never meant to be played half time.

If it helps I'm trying for tasteful sweeps with my bass playing. Less wank more helping with the melody.

Yea, no offense to the shreddy wanker types of the world, but I hate shreddy wankerisms. I feel like its too show offy and doesn't really add anything to the song unless your someone like Yngwie Malmsteen who at least is making a melody of sorts.
Basically, fuck djent.

Seriously. Meshuggah is my favourite band that isn't Iron Maiden, but they birthed and simultaneously killed a whole way of playing. They are pretty much the only band that I listen to who play in that style.
I think it takes a fuck load of skill to make technical playing sound rad. A lot more skill than it takes to learn how to play technically advanced stuff. But for those bands that do I dig it, but they are more the exception that proves the rule.
Re sweeps - I do quite like it when you can combine sweeps in the middle of a riff or a melody line or whatever, so that the sweep isn't the focus. I'm not good enough to do that, but it's cool.

Right, which means that its melodic qualities are probably lacking.
You should, in theory, be able to play a good riff in a myriad of different ways and still have it strike you as a good riff. You can't do that with very many swept passages, even if they're just variations on arpeggios played quickly.

Eh, there are plenty of bands that do it well. Listen to the second half of Selkies by Between the Buried and Me. A lot of sweeping in there (mostly in the last 2 minutes) and it's gorgeous. Scale the Summit is another good band for technical stuff done with nice melodies and stuff.
