How come nobody has already mentioned my favorite mini synth in the price range: Dwarfcraft Devices ROT YR BRAAAAAAAAIN! Because ...synths without keys are so much more exciting.

Well, due to an unexpected bill my budget for her has shrank into a third.

Which means I'm going to get her one of the Korg Monotrons. I guess the basic one, unless you guys think the Duo or Delay are cooler.

Hilariously, I'm going to use the gift card for GC that she gave me for my birthday last week to get it.

Haven't tried any yet, but people seem to really like the delay on the delay one, like so much that a Volca delay disappointed someone here by comparison.

Monotron Delay doesn't have a scaled keyboard. It spans several octaves, so it's nearly impossible to play a melody. The delay on it is really awesome though, and it self-oscillates. It's good for making sound effects, and running other things through it, but not much of an instrument on it's own.

Monotron Duo is easiest to play melodies and it has a major and minor scale built in, but you still have to tune it, especially since the X-mod can make it sound pretty dissonant. It has the most interesting textures. It's filter is great, but it has no LFO, so sweeps are knob only.

I haven't owned regular Monotron, but it's more like your bread and butter sounds. With the LFO, you can make pulsing tom/bass drum sounds with it too.

I have a Monotron Delay which I like a lot but the Monotron Duo is probably the best option for someone that doesn't currently own a keyboard or synth.

...but that depends on the context of use and so on. Not every instrument has to play melodies (if any has, at all).

We have a few modular synths in my band. None of the synths is connected to any keyboards or anything. And it's apparently not at all exceptional among the modular synth players that the keys are not the interesting part off the synth to follow, You know ;)

But I digress. Just wanted to point out that with a cramped minimal sized excuse for a keyboard it suffices well enough if You can follow the key a bit, while making interesting tone layers in there, one or two fingers at time, and concentrate on making interesting synth layers over other instruments. Something crazy, childish, obnoxious and fun. :)

(yeah, infamous double-poster strikes again - bare with me)

If You think at all Your GF would like something crazy noisy fun... how about Electro Faustus stuff? Like the photo theremine and the Korg monotron delay or duo should be lots of fun.

got the pocket piano green now and i love it. the monotron was a toy, this is a FUN AS SHIT music maker.
True, but it's also almost 5x more expensive.
