Great post. Love all of this. I'd heard Minority Blues Band and Lovemen before, but not the others. The 'Turncoat' song is fantastic.

I had a split 7" with The Dauntless Elite and The Because, but I never did listen to The Because side. I don't think I even own that 7" anymore. Doh. All that old Snuffy Smile/Waterslide stuff is so hard to find these days.

These guys are my favourite punk band from Japan. I Excuse totally shred. There's just not enough pinch harmonics in pop punk:

Me at my most prophetic: there will come a day when all bands are two-person, Bass-VI-drummer duos.

I used to really love Screeching Weasel though. My Brain Hurts was great in Jr. High and early high school.

Commercial punk in the UK was something kinda like pop punk.

There are gems in there and it had its time and place but a lot of the stuff that got branded and took over for a while was terrible. I don't listen to it hardly ever anymore but sometimes it is good for a quick listen.

And every grinder, crusty, and "punk" I have kicked it with in the last ten years despise it too. 90% of the time I can't stand it either but some of the stuff posted here is alright.

B) I do however feel like you might be painting a lot of music with the same brush... "pop-punk" might mean New Found Glory and Blink 182, but it could also mean Tigers Jaw and Title Fight... or, like lordgalvar pointed out, Stiff Little Fingers, etc. ... the label pop-punk refers to the sound now, not their commercial leanings, and a lot of pop-punk bands go really hard live

Saw SLF this year I think...there are two of them going around XSLF which is the original "band" with a new singer and SLF with only the singer guy. Saw SLF...one of the worst shows I've ever been to. Walked out of that...just lame. But they had a few ok songs on recordings. Crimpshrine were ok for a listen once every 10 years, but not a regular thing.

Toy Dolls though (even though they are called Oi! or punk pathetique sometimes) are about as poppy as I'll get and are always a blast.

But 99% of that OC, East Bay ripoff stuff I think is awful.

The stuff from the second wave UK punk was sometimes refered to as "commertial punk" meaning it still kind of went to the early first wave stuff for influence without getting heavier or weirder and admitting they wanted to make it as a band...like Major Accident and UK Subs (to a lesser extent, but they were very much in it for the hits, you know?...a lot of pop influence and blues and stuff in those early days).

There were a couple of bands from my town that were signed during the pop punk boom. One turned into Vendetta Red* (anyone remember them...they claimed to be from Portland or something but were from Bakersfield and called the Acylics...)the other one was the Lebecs, but can't find anything.

The pop punk scene was always very separate from the rest of us but there was crossover at shows. They usually kicked it more with the ska-christians.

I do remember Vendetta Red. The singer had a serious affinity for Roger Daltrey, and I mean that in the sense that he ripped him off, in appearance, sound, everything. Annoying.

I wanted to say, unoriginal music is bad, but that's too simple. Sometimes unoriginal music is awesome. There haven't been many less original bands than St. Vitus. St. Vitus literally "wrote" songs by playing along to Iron Maiden records and changing the lyrics. But how fucking godly is St. Vitus?! They pretty much introduced America to doom. So I don't actually think it's an unoriginality problem. Besides, pop-punk isn't about making original music, it's about being tighter and faster than the last band before you. Just like blues, shoegaze, and any other number of genres that put a higher premium on playing existing tropes well, than on being original.

I guess it's just how originally you approach being an unoriginal band...?

Hah, I should have kept that to myself. Sorry to be a grump in this thread. I feel like if I were to say this out loud where I'm from most people I know would jump down my throat.

Pop punk has always just sounded like boy bands with loud guitars to me.
