they usually do break right on the saddle, but i've filed it and taken the guitar in and everything. i don't think that's the issue. it's both the 4th and 5th string too, which are the ones that take the most abuse from me, and being as it's two of them and i've tried to address the saddle issue, i can only believe it's operator error.

misterstomach wrote:what's a decent string that you can easily get in 12's or 13's (probably preferably 13's) with a wound 3rd that's easy to get in most any guitar store? i break strings all the time, so i'm not that worried about them getting dull more than a month or so out.

These used to work for me when I was still down with the wound 3rd:

A bit larger on the bottom end:
http://www.curtmangan.com/13-62-baritone-nickel-wound-set/

Not sure if they are readily available around you though, but they do come in individual packages! They are cheap and last forever.

Other than these the only ready made sets that are widely available I have found with a wound third in that size range are...D'Addario :picard:

Hey parker, what style bridge setup do you have? I used to be a chronic string destroyer but some hardware changes have mostly solved that.

it's similar to a tune-o-matic. it's a vintage ibanez artist. stock bridge with brass saddles and a gibson fine tuning tail piece. i actually really like the bridge setup. miles of bridge travel for intonation. and i've slayed strings on all the guitars i've owned for a long time.

rollers are nice and do help with that especially if you bend hard. One issue though, make sure you measure carefully before retrofitting. The roller bridges add a little height to your action and is you dont have the downward travel on the main pegs to drop it back to normal youll be in trouble.

Had that issue on Ryansummits guitar, I had to take it apart and grind a ton of material off the bridges bottom to compensate. that fucker got hot on the grinder and gave me nasty blister too haha

I remember before I switched to wound 3rds. It's not that they suck to play, mine wouldn't intonate or hold a stable tuning. It took a little while to adjust to the wound string, but personally I find the stability better for me. :idk:

I use Not Even Slinkies on all of my guitars (LP and SG), and I like them other than the fact that I have always hated the g string on any brand of strings I have used in any tuning. Used to be in B, but now I'm in drop A. I think I may have to try something with a wound third. Maybe that will help. FWIW though, I really do like the Not Even Slinkies. I used to use DR strings for the longest time after switching from D'addario but the stores around here stopped carrying them. Ernie Balls are pretty much at every store so I started using them because they were easily available. They hold up for a while longer than D'addarios before starting to sound dead. Not quite as long lasting as DR but they are good enough for me. Someone mentioned Curt Mangan strings. I used them for a little while too and they were pretty good. Held up to regular practice sessions in a hot sweatbox twice a week for a month before changing strings.

I had to go to the practice space today and while I was up there I went by the music store and picked up a set of strings with a wound 3rd. I got one pair of D'Addarios and one pair of Curt Mangan. Both sets are .56 - .13 w/ a wound.26 for the 3rd string) I didn't realize it until I got home that the Curt Mangan strings are acoustic strings. Its ok though because I need to change them on my acoustic too. I put the D'Addarios on my LP Custom and man, talk about a world of difference. The wound 3rd is awesome. I don't think I'm gonna go back to plain 3rds anymore. I dunno if I'll stay with this brand or look for another. They sound really good right now but they haven't held up for very long in the past. I also can't stand the way they package by twos.
