The old Fender Bass V has only 15 frets as I think do some of the Danelectro basses.
That's a good point, I guess. The only major thing less frets ends up affecting is the range it extends to in the upper register.
The Bass V was a disaster though so I doubt anyone would dare go below 18.

Yeah, that was just a guess as to why they went with 18 frets instead of 19 or 20 or 21.
The Bass V was a disaster because nobody understood it and it was a niche instrument from it's very beginnings on the design table.
I think 18 frets on a Bass VI is fine. Really, who's playing that high into the upper register?
(I probably would, but it wouldn't be a problem for me, I'd do it with a slide.)

Who knows, maybe the Bass V will come into fashion like the VI has been lately. I kinda doubt it but it would be neat!
..and if it didn't take off we could get another batch of swingers from the leftover bodies. I've always wanted a swinger

As close to a Swinger as I'll ever get:

Still wanna Bass V though.

How often do you guys really play that high up on the neck anyway?
Yeah, that makes sense Chank. I play all over the neck on my Bass VI but I'm no bassist. It looks so stumpy to me with that short neck. Scale is longer than a Bass VI but that's only because the bridge is so far back on the body, just looks off to me. And I'd miss the trem.
I think I'd like it better in a different finish tho, something along the lines of this:

That's always your question.
(Schnikes, I liked the colors of the one they had at the 2012 NAMM, that black with the tortoiseshell guard.)

Along with the fender V you can add the Guild "George Barnes Guitar in F" based on the guild aristocrat body (except 2" deep) and short scale, it was tuned to the key of F so a guitarist could play with trumpets.....just what every guitar player needs....OH WAIT NOBODY NEEDS THAT!

I hate extended scale guitars with the bridge all the way back. Give me a long fucking neck and put that bridge where it belongs

Wow, that's nutty. Gotta admire the thought though.

...sounds okay,

might sound better with different gear but ...that red has to be from unicorn blood to justify the price if You ask me. And the fretboard / what the fuck is THAT

Is it made from some obscure extinct tone wood so they didn't afford a full length fretboard?
Yeah it's cheaper than the Funder custom Bass VIs and might be really well built BUT STILL no. Just no.
