Dude, try a G&L. It might LOOK a but like a fender, but they sound HUGE and incredibly ballsy. They're really well made, not absurdly expensive, and ludicrously versatile.

Or, say fuck it, and buy a 70's Gibson. C'mon.

So I will speak from my own experience here as I've tried a fuck load of basses this last year or two. Hah. So this is all IMO.

Stingrays and pretty much any Musicman bass has a very distinct tone. I've played others that try to mimic the sound and it doesn't come close.
Spector's Coda jazz was very much so unique in it's sound. Lots of growl and texture.
Dingwall's have a nice distinct tone as well. More punchy and great for tapping (if you're into that sort of thing), while having the best B string I've been able to try to date.
Roscoe's are fucking fat and intense sounding. Similar tone to the MTD's I've heard in demos. High output like a Bongo, but more low end and growl.

Last but not least, the Squire Jazz bass. The best bang for your buck bass I've played. Noodled on one in GC for about an hour and was in love. Cheap, unique and feels just as good as any 1000 buck bass I've played.


All in all, I think most basses have a very distinct tone. There are sooooooooooooooo many factors. The Warwicks I've played were also awesome.

My favs would be

Roscoe, Musicman, Warwick, Dingwall, Squire in that order.

I currently own a Squier P-Bass; maybe I should sell it and try another Squier bass (jazz or mustang? or what about the Telecaster bass?)

The Peavey T-40 seems very interesting, but I don't think that any that I see on ebay have the mute, which would be part of why I'd want one. Did it come with the guitar? Is it east to get a good one? Should I try getting a mute regardless of what bass I get?

I WISH I could get a G&L Bass like that(Telecaster is my favorite guitar shape), but it's about $1000 out of my max budget.

That Warmoth build looks very cool, and I especially like that it's environmentally friendly, but I'd about messing up one of the options etc. I'm scared to even buy a new neck for one of my Teles because what if it doesn't fit or I don't like it!?

Mustangs are cool basses, they are a little thinner sounding with a the stock pickup then say a P or a J but they kind'a make it up with a funky lofi thing, really they sound very much like a 51 P bass/tele bass. The cool ting is Fender is making a few variants with different pickups like the tele bass bucker so you would end up with a cross between the two... but if I were to actually... really want one [again] I'd want a MIJ one [the reissue model] not the pawnshop or squire, why? because the few of those I have played kick the asses of the last bunch of MIA Ps and Js I played. Also though since we are on this chain of thought why not look at a 70's Fender musicmaster bass, those are neat and they are way under your budget limit

Grizz, tell me about the Alumitone Bass Bar. I've spotted them as a possible upgrade on a Dearmond Pilot, but haven't caught a lot of info. How does it play with fuzzes and stuff?

It's loud as hell, like EMG loud. Much more "flat" than an EMG, however.
If it didn't work well with fuzzes/etc, I would have sold it already
