Yup, it does what it does ok. But I'd advise looking elsewhere for your looping needs.

Why is that? Poor audio quality? Awkward controls?

In short: it has way too many little quirks to get around.
The bypass is bad, and gets exponentially worse if you have other buffers in our chain (and the effects are horrible). The undo function is confusingly hard to use. The starting and stopping of the loops is really weird, in a way that should probably be demonstrated to be understood. The metronome is awful, and the lights always flash to some otherworldly rhythm that I have yet to interpret, other than when it flashes red it's the start of the loop. And the effects only affect the input signal.
Good things: you can do polyrhythms (it's tricky but possible). The loop automatically plays back at the input level (this is incredibly convenient). You can start and stop two loops (not at the exact same time though...like I said, quirks). No submenus or hidden features.
If you can afford it get something better, but this thing will do what it advertises if you coax it juuuust right.

So it's not quite the bargain that people initially thought. .I don't care much about the effects or metronome but I like the idea of polyrhythmic loops and I don't want something too big. What would the other options be?

I'm interested to. I want to keep my looping compact, or I'd just buy a DL4. I was thinking a digitech? they seem to get decent reviews and have a decent price point me thinks.

I don't really know of a way to keep it compact. The boss rc 30 can do multiple loops, from what I've read it's tricky if you have just the looper; if you have the extra footswitch you can do it pretty easy. But I don't of a way to keep it simple. There are other options but they just get bigger.
I thought about getting two rc-2's on the cheap, it might be tricky to get them synced up right but it would work (one thing no one complains about those things is that weird high-frequency buzz that's always on them; it's probably just my weird dog-range hearing but still).
For what it's worth I'm not looking to upgrade from the lil' looper, even with its idiosyncrasies. Because it's very straightforward when it comes to basic operation, turning off the loop at almost the same time is close enough for me (you just have to be fast with the footwork), and I don't care at all about the effects. The other things are small enough that they have just become second nature for me. Also the buttons are big enough I don't ever actually have to bend over to push them, but far enough from the pedals that I don't push them on accident. I can just push with the tip of my shoe and it works.

Is the Vox's sound quality okay? I suppose the alternative for me might be something like the Jam Man Solo but I would prefer to have the capacity for two loops.

The loop sound quality's pretty good. I looped a drone thing I had going (eau claire thunder feedback on>ddmmtt>mini gnome) and once it was looped the difference between the loop signal and the original was really small. I had to really listen close to hear it.
That's part of the reason I'm keeping it, plus it's small and it's no trouble getting the second loop in time with the first.
