This, plus active electronics are the worst, in my opinion. I've been trying to get my bassist to ditch his Warwick for a "real" bass for 2 years now.
Agreed, our bassist uses his G&L in passive mode, for some reason his pedals do not like the volume boost the active electronics provide. He's now on the search for a passive epi/gibby Flying V bass.

It's just about placement of the preamp in the signal chain, nothing more.
MANY modern fuzz pedals work absolutely fine with a boost pedal or another fuzz in front, or an active preamp in front. Think of it as stacking, it doesn't always sound best with the boost on full blast. Same with the active electronics. Works way better with some gear that way, not so good with other, and there's always option of backing down the dials so... it's a matter of taste, said the dog, licking his balls clean, a matter of taste.
