I put my jazzmaster with baritone strings into CEGCGC today. It sounded pretty damn nice. Upper strings sounded great as textured reverby post-rock sort of shit. Definitely gonna play with that some more.

Hmm, I just had this problem today. My first 'E' always breaks after about a month of use which is certainly not desirable. Today I was tuning it down and it broke... so frustrating . I will have to try ordering a few packs of these Elixir strings and see how they hold up.

What kind of strings?

Anyway, if I play in a tuning that's not standard intervals on a bass I go full-retard very quickly.

Yeah, the phosphor bronze ones. I usually rock .13's, but with those strings, even the .11's will hold up for three or four months. Can't recommend them enough.

I wanted to tune my guitar to CFAADF# today.
But my high strings aren't thick enough to support it and I'm still missing my 1st string.

So I tuned to DGBBE(missing the G#). I didn't get to really dive deep into it, but man I really dig it so far.
Gonna get some strings to get the right tension with this. I might tunes the 1st string to G or A instead of G#, not sure yet, will have to experiment.

Also, two strings tuned to the same pitch are fucking awesome.
Drooooooooooooooooones.

I tune things to unison a lot. Picked it up from the Deftones (Stef plays 7-strings but tunes the high strings to unison. I am not sure what he does with the 8-strings), there are interesting tones to be had. If anybody knows any of the tunings Kurt Ballou gets up to, let me know.

His tunings are a huge part of the Converge sound.

Unison is great, it gives you that really tense sound where your chords won't necessarily resolve anymore...I really love the way Brian Molko tunes in Placebo most of the time. Low to high he tunes: FBbEbAbCC

Listen to the song/album Without You I'm Nothing and you'll hear what I'm talking about.

Not crazy, but I have mine in standard, except I replaced the high e with a second b string.
1 semitone difference between strings -> cranked Fuck is dis-harmonic bliss.

I got into the "standard" open tunings from playing slide guitar and Kottke/Fahey-style stuff back in the 70s, the typical open-chord tunings. i got my first favorite non-standard tunings off Neil Young and Stephen Stills: the dropped-D a la "The Damage Done," the double dropped-D (DADGBD) Neil uses on everything from "Cinnamon Girl" to "Fuckin' Up," and the D-modal tuning from "Bluebird" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" which Stills uses as DADAAD low-to-high but i prefer as DADADD. probably my favorite now is DADGAD, because it allows for so many hammer-ons and pull-offs in first position in the home key of D...i just love how it allows me to get more expressiveness out of the left-hand technique. i also used to use a couple of really weird Joni Mitchell tunings i can't even remember now, as well as the David Crosby "Guinevere"/"Deja Vu" tuning which IIRC is E minor 7th EBDGBD or EBDGAD. for rock rhythm i like DADGAD and open G, both of which lend themselves well to massive I/IV and/or V/I changes.

Joni Mitchell tunings are weird. I don't think she remembers them either.

I read somewhere (I don't remember where) that she had a strange device made for her that "tunes" her guitar for her. She just keeps her guitar in standard and plugs it in to this thing and it alters the signal to whatever tuning its programmed for. Just so that she doesn't have to tune inbetween every song.

I've been using CGDACE off and on for a while now. I like all the fifths on the low strings whether it be for power chord melodies or longer intervals. Octave chords become major 3rds and such.

And it's probably an open tuning but I've been going into DADF#AD lately

For slide stuff I use DGDGGD.

My acoustic is usually tuned BGDGBbD. Just resonantes really cool that way.

One of my old bands used CGDGBbE for some stuff. That's a fun one.

Just tuned to DGCFGA, super fun for massive fuzz chords.
