I've definitely bought pedals just to try them out, knowing I could probably get most of the cost back. I think of it as a rental fee. It seems like the only option when these things aren't in the shops.

yep I do this all the time. Especially if I find a good deal on a pedal that I've been curious about..

I love it it let's me try out lots of pedals so I can figure out what to keep and what to look for etc.

To add to my Manx Vs. Pharaoh statement: The Manx definitely has more presence and a better top end bite for me. It's a bit less thick but more clear, and the tone is much more balanced. The Pharaoh on the other end has more bass/low mid punch but a lot less high end bite to it (it is known to be great for doom of course). I also think the range of the EQ on the Manx is bigger but the Pharaoh sounds pretty damn good wherever you set the tone knobs. Lastly the Manx is more fuzzy like StopReferencing said.

I think the two can coincide on a pedalboard together. Their tones aren't drastically different, but they are different enough where you could excuse having both

I'd trade my Pharaoh for a year4545. orange stack gives me plenty of low end.

I'd hope a full Orange stack brings more low end than any pedal could supply, that's a given...

the next big thing will probably be a fuzz.

I have the Proteus and i't amazing... it's a keeper.
I wish to ear a demo of Xerograph with a guitar.

i'll tell you, the Emma may not have the adjustability that some of the other EFs have, but it's the only one i've heard that has that lovely warm round tone of the old MuTron. not that i'm opposed to the Prometheus or Gyroscope, one of which will find a spot on my board for its various filter capabilities, but i fell for the Emma as soon as i heard it. my impression is that most EFs get some of the life tweaked out of their sound in the attempt to make their response mathematically correct, or to make them work for everything from sub-bass to piccolo. particularly, it seems that making EFs that double as guitar and bass devices kinda doesn't work...the instruments seem to need different responses from the circuit.

The next big thing is the pedal you don’t have, is unavailable and unaffordable.
