You're going to have to get all tube console gear and record at ungodly volume levels with minimal signal path then compress the signal naturally using 2" tape recorders then mix that down to 1/4 stereo, hence the first compression stage. Then you'll want to send that to a mastering engineer who uses all tube mastering levelers, EQ and compressors to get "that sound" ready for vinyl. Once you get those master tapes back you need to cut that on vinyl which will compress that sound even more and viola! You'll have that big fat ass tone like Buffalo Springfield.

Early Byrds stuff was squashed to hell on the way to tape. IIRC, the McGuinn 12-string Rick sound was through an LA-2A straight to the board and tape. No amps. Those dang hippie guitarists were not to be trusted -- they played their amps so loud they would distort, ferchrissakes. Even allowed to play their amps, there would usually be some sort of compressor or limiter controlling the mayhem with a heavy hand.

anybody know of any compressors that do parallel? ie. blending dry and wet signal? that would be good on not only instruments but also line level stuff? mono? stereo?

i get a lot of results for like industrial equipment when i google.
