I agree however I modified this statement cuz I hardly think sexual preference should enter into the equation. :)

No you can leave it. I took a survey of all my gay friends, and they agree. They're not interested in any of that. :p

Screw the 250/D+. If you like the sound of it, build your own. If you really can't build it, you can get a EQD White Light, which sounds way better IMHO.

Double post here too.
I'm interested in the White Light. Is it based off of an existing circuit, or is it an EQD original?

From this review: http://www.freqcontrol.com/index.php?/t ... ite_light/

The EarthQuaker White Light Overdrive is not a “transparent overdrive pedal.” Your guitar sounds different when you turn it on versus when it is not on. I like this. I do not wish to be stabbed by Bro and I do not wish to stab Bro.
Like its DOD Overdrive/Preamp 250 forebears, however, the White Light does not change the basic tone of the guitar quite as much as some other common overdrives. The Ibanez Tubescreamer and Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive (and many within the universe of pedals which are based on such designs), for example, both trim the lows and highs while boosting the midrange (which, in turn, seems to further diminish the lows and highs to our ears). The WL bumps up the mids and highs just a tad and the “Weight” control tailors the bass response.
The Weight control might have more aptly been called the “Diet” knob. The more signal the pedal is fed, the more girthsome the sound gets. Reduce the amount of signal going in to the pedal and the sound gets skinnier. With the control turned fully clockwise, you’re pedal is dining on bacon cheeseburgers and your sound might get a bit mushy, especially with the gain up high. All the way counter-clockwise, it’s getting rice cakes and will sound a bit anemic. In between the poles is a nice range of meals.

Makes me think it is a super-250, heavily modded circuit with the added tone control described, and probably not even the same chip as the 250/D+ used. Definitely original in the sense that it does not attempt to be exact specs of some vintage pedal, or even alludes in its marketing to that.

+1 on the PDS-8000, its beyond stupid to pay 300 on this pedal when you can have an Echolution with a quadrillion more options that also does everything better than the PDS series...

Tubescreamers are overpriced for such an old, simple circuit. The boutique clones are worse, but I understand the labor that goes into a lot of those.

The DL4 costs a lot while no longer being the king of features. And their quality sucks until you send it to drasp.

The ZVex stuff is all overpriced IMHO but again, I understand the labor that goes into handbuilding and handpainting each. And that makes me realize that Zvex is one step up towards corporations & factories from builders like Tom, who I would rather support :thumb: because the Algal Bloom sounds wicked! :thumb:

the DL4 is absolutely overrated, when for $100 more you can get an M9, which doubles the loop time, and does EVERYTHING. i thought it was overpriced at first, but for everything it does, it's worth it. i think some of the Boss pedals are overrated. for example, the DD7 has tap tempo, but it's really only usable if you buy the footswitch to control it, unless you feel like holding the pedal down for 2 seconds, and then tapping in the tempo. i hate that stuff, when you pay hard earned money for something that you can't access all of it's features.

You have to buy an expression pedal for the M9, too, it has a lot of stuff I wouldn't ever use, and it is way huge. I'd rather have a few good-sounding pedals in that space than a bunch of patches I'll never use in a multieffects pedal :idk:

Cody_Pole wrote:Hey their guys and gals thought I'd post a topic about effects pedals that are outdated but yet still retain or acquire a hefty price tag.

My example being the PDS-8000 its pretty old and their are pedals that can approximate what it does that are cheaper, yet I've regularly
seen these for around 300/350. :(

Anybody got any other examples?

Hi!
I'm just curious about notably expensive "muff mod" pedals, overpriced in some way, because you can get more than the same from GGG or BYOC and with very simple soldering skills you have great boutique pedal just for 60 $ - tuned by yourself.
Eau Claire Thunder.
Black Arts Pharaoh.

People have their DIY limits that they won't pass. Some won't solder, some won't go beyond a pure paint-by-numbers kit with all the holes drilled, some won't touch SMD ("present!"), and some won't program a Spin FV-1 eprom.

Devi pedals are a good object lesson, given that she sells PCB boards with parts and provides the schematics for most of her pedals. Yet people buy the production pedals. The baseline pricing is very fair and the pedals have better resale than your DIY. Interestingly, the DIY availability and info adds to the value of the pedals -- you have one that's close but not quite and you can change a couple things to match another circuit to see if it fits better. How many people do this, though? FSB and DIYSB regulars are not even up to a substantial minority of effects-obsessed guitarists. Devi hasn't undercut herself -- she has bought goodwill and she's making sure she gets some small coin from DIY-ers who might otherwise go to Madbean for PCB's.

nobody buys pds-8000 pedals or ts-808's for whatever distinctive sound they have. they're just fripp or SRV fans.
it's the people that spend shitloads on a "boutique" copy that should be mocked!

I had a PDS-8000 but not because of Fripp or SRV people I dug who used it were Kevin Shields, Ira Kaplan, Neil Halstead but even they
weren't the reason I wanted one.

i wish somebody made a book about how much certain pedals are worth. i'm tired of seeing people try to get ridiculous prices for things that they think are reasonable. for example, i'm curious as to what an Algal Bloom w/choke toggle and a custom paint would be worth used. i think a general guide to know how to price something would be amazing.
