I think his genius lies in the fusion of synthesizer/guitar work he did in the studio. I would not compare him to santana as a guitarist. sanatana wins.

I grabbed an old Harmony Stratotone that someone had stripped and gutted on the cheap last year. Rick Kelly at Carmine St. Guitars here in NY did a little CPR on it and threw this dog-ear P90 in it for me. Thing rules the school. All warm and mellow. Sounds great and the neck is like a freakin' baseball bat.

Thanks man! Haven't recorded anything with it to date. Maybe I'll use it for whatever I demo next. Stay tuned!

Santana rips this dude apart, just sayin.
In what respect, making shitty pop songs with the douchecock from Matchbox 20?

I could take or leave most of the "arena-era" Who stuff, but his earlier output up to and including Tommy and Live at Leeds (on which the P-90 SG is featured prominently) is kick-ass rock and roll with a genius pop sensibility. Massively influential on what was to become punk rock.
Santana? Always seemed like music for chicks and old burnouts to me. As far as who can play the guitar better? Could care less.

I like your avatar though, got to see the Black Angels open for Black Mountain earlier this year - excellent bill.

Damn dude, Stratotones have been my only non-bass-related source of GAS for a long time now. That is sweet.

Santana? Pete Townsend? Who cares? They play PRS and Stratocasters now anyways.
As for myself, I bought my SG Classic to bang out some loud chords at the time. I had Pete in my little mind, but it just so happens it's an excellent lead guitar as well. It's the guitar I bring to jam sessions/practices when I haven't played with the other musicians before. I can make it fit into any genre, whether I play lead, rhythm, or noise. Last weekend I used it to play with a fellow that is heavily influenced by Bright Eyes and I made wonderfully ambient lead lines to his songs.
And as much as I love my Cherry SG Classic... I still want an all black jr.:

Yeah, I've never understood why Pete switched to strats after playing les Paul and sgs all those years. It makes no sense at all. I feel like a lot of artists switch to shittier guitars later in their careers and I have no clue why. At the rock and roll hall of fame I'm pretty sure I saw a schecter Tele copy that Pete played in the 80's.

As for santana, I never even realized there were guitar players outthere who cared that he even exists. Aside from all his solos sounding the same, I do think the guy has some chops, but I don't think he has ever really done anything relevant or worthwhile, even in his heyday.

he summoned metatron while meditating on acid
also Pete Townsend plays fender guitars and fender amps cause he has to. its in his contract with fender. he played a supersonic head at the superbowl. the cab was offstage.

IT FUCKING RULES.
They have a used one for $105.
They say the toggle switch is broken so it's probably a $10 fix.
I may have to buy this myself.
Edit: I just bought this myself!

This showed up a couple days ago and the only thing wrong with the switch was it was missing the nut that keeps it from recessing into the guitar. The nut just happened to be the same size as the ones on a 3PDT and I just happened to have a box of 25 lying around.
Moral of the story: I got a brand new Squier Tele Custom II from Musicians Friend for $105

Sad but true, as much as I like to pretend that the Who hung it up when Moon died. Santana can still suck it though.

Those things are sexy as all hell. Have considered letting my Classic go to get a Junior, but I just can't go through with it.
