Now here's a question for discussion: What if he fucked his friend's sister? Would it depend on context? What kinds of contexts would make it ok and what kinds would not?

i think it's important to give one's work careful consideration. i just felt that BB's initial post sounded like he was getting stuck in the deciding phase, and i've found that sometimes you just have to bust on through. i spent years trying to write the kind of songs i wanted to write...finally i gave that up and started writing the kind of songs that come to me naturally. i've found that to be more better artistically, even if it isn't what my intellect wants. does that make any sense?

I have actually produced things though - not that you were necessarily suggesting I hadn't. The project is actually starting to take form, since I started working with another guitar player and am putting a band together. That's what made me go back and be critical of the premises of it all. I've been working in this particular style and learning to write it. I'm worried that my ideas (lyrically from Rimbaud, Miller - without the whole vaginas like mountains stuff though, Huxley etc, even if it's a bit less literary in a rock context, and musically like '77 and post-punk with some jazz/eastern tonalities) are dated. I mean, the poetry in rock thing hasn't really been done since the Doors in that way. I'm also worried that what separates my writing very obviously from Morrison's in my mind will not be that clear to other people. I hate even bringing him into my reasoning but I sort of have to. If there's a person working from similar influences/premises that came before you, you're almost bound to be compared. I also worry there's a development from the Doors on i'm trying to override, that integrates the poetic aspect more seamlessly than I have, thereby making my lyrics cartoonish and clumsy.

I realize that I've answered the suggestion that I was overanalyzing with overanalysis. I also don't expect you to tell me those ideas aren't dated (that would depend completely on the writer), it just helps me to externalize things this way.

Edit: I don't want to keep deleting stuff, so I'll just add that I realized I'm questioning my work but ignoring one of the premises of it. It's rooted in the punk context by the sheer arrogance of some kid running around and pretending to be Rimbaud. The same kind of arrogance that made Rimbaud what he was. This is also more or less explicit in the songs. By this description I'm sure it sounds like one big mess of odd ideas, and it sort of is, but I think I just realized I don't care. In this spirit:

"Ah! I am so forsaken I will offer at any shrine impulses toward perfection"

I think calling him up midway through a raucous bareback DP and letting him know what was up would be a deal breaker.

i hope i'm clear in that i'm trying to encourage, not criticize.

at this point it's kind of pointless to worry about the relative "datedness" of an idea. musical genres and concepts are like spices on the shelf now; folks add them as needed. to the extent that one can come up with a "new" idea, it's laudable, but it's awfully hard to come up with a new way to combine those 12 notes nowadays. it's rare that i hear a band any more that i can't sum up in a phrase of the pattern "(BAND 1) combined with (aspects of)(BAND 2)." if someone doesn't accuse you of sounding like the Doors for combining a poetic lyric sensibility with rock, they'll ding you for allegedly sounding like the Blue Aeroplanes, or being like the Divine Comedy, or retreading Bob fucking Dylan (especially if you're into Rimbaud), or something equally irrelevant. any easy comparison people can come up with, they will, because it's easier than thinking.

i think what you want/need to do is concentrate on making the best version of what you want to do/already have in progress that you can. get some basics together; go over them carefully; if they feel right to you, play them for people you trust and take their feedback. if it's really right, you should be able to feel it. once you have work in hand, you can judge its relative fitness and revise, rewrite, and/or discard as you see fit. a realized product, if we must use the term, will give you a better idea of whether the ideas are sound, even if it's a sticks-and-stones GarageBand demo or similar with drum loops. that's all i'm saying. i entirely understand doubting your own premises. i'm encouraging you to try to get past that because my work has been crippled for years by that syndrome. "is this any good?" "isn't this just re-done (NAME OF ARTIST HERE)?" and worst of all "do i have anything to SAY?" to do is to say.

Not if he's the other "P". ;)

I wish UPS allowed you to pick up packages partway through shipping. I know it's in Oak Creek which is at most 45 minutes away, but it will take three days to go through Elm Grove, then past where I live to Watertown, then back to my house.

Yeah, it was much less interesting than a situation like this, or one where I fuck his pets.

He's just been a dick lately and I called him out on it because no one else would. It's all sorted now though and we're back to sleepovers complete with makeovers, truth or dare, pillow fights, and a "Will & Grace" marathon.

Tried to call in ahead for dinner earlier after not eating all day, my phone doesn't work. Decide to go and just wait for my food there. Get there, order, hand my card to the cashier, and toss a cash tip in the jar. She goes to ring up my card and says it's not working. Go next door to the ATM, and it doesn't even read my card. Go back towards the house, and stop by another ATM. This time it went through, I chose my money withdraw amount, and then it started processing. Printed out a receipt that said invalid service  I still haven't eaten anything.

If you contemplate dating/fooling with those "amazing girls", you might as well call of your relationship now. Not trying to be a negative nancy but it just means you're not 100% happy. Why put your self and another through a rough situation?

If you don't contemplate it you aren't normal. You're always going to think about it. Doesn't mean anything one way or the other. Just do what you think is best for you.

I hate going to work sick. Makes it take twice as long to get better, because instead of being at home resting you're at work.
