I find that I usually am much more successful having gear and FX convos with guitarists. (although they're still usually pretty lame, mostly either just an M13 or 3-4 Boss pedals) Most of the bassists tend to react like this if I mention using FX:

Around here everyone I talked to geeks out about cars. I just smile and nod and pretend I have a clue what's going on. Then disappear into the bushes. I'm just gonna start busting out pics of my board to random people as if I were that annoying coworker who always wants to talk about his kids.

Absolutely mowing on grilled chicken and corn on the cob and realizing I could realistically move to some distant place like NYC, Austin or the Bay Area, etc. in about six months from now. I could even start looking for a job...
