That's pretty much how it worked out for me too. Shitty.
I played shows with a Crate 2x12 combo in high school, no joke haha! Main guitar was a shitty, shitty, shitty MIM Strat that I borrowed from our bass player, just god awful. No pedals until I finally got my hands on a couple beat Boss delays and I rarely used 'em. Plug n' play back then.
At least I didn't know any better, made it easier to deal with for sure.

pfffff
i played more shows with trash gear than good gear... probably that is normal
btw, a mesa boogie blue angel stopped working at a gig once. sold it immediatly and, beside the rectifier, never got an amp nor gas by that company again... that may be a healing process too...

No Internet... no cell phone... and I was living in a small town in the north of Quebec.
Looking at that BE-5 make me smile.
We sound like some old dude.

Haha, so true!
"These youngsters and their fancy boutique gear and Internet access don't know how good they've got it! When I was a kid blah blah blah"
That's some proper old dude talk.

i had one o them white harmonys for about 10yrs
the only amp i had owned was
essentially an 8" speaker that distorted
at any volume
and an accoustic
that a buddy o mine still has
until januuary of this year
when i cleaned up
and got hooked on playin again
at that time i actually said the words
"all i need is one o them big muffs and im set"

I used a Vox Valvetronix VT30 for years. It was an awesome practise amp, as it cut through like a sumabitch. For guitars, I had a bog-standard Epiphone Les Paul Custom, a modified Squier Strat and a Maverick F-1. For pedals I had a Dunlop wah and little else.

My first amp was a Marshall 15g combo, paired with a Digitech Death Metal and a Dean Vendetta which I had for YEARS. I feel bad for that poor guitar. I Goodwilled it, it really just needed a new nut and a setup, but I figured a kid could have some fun thrashing around on it too

My first amp was a Sears (hey hey!).
Second a Peavy Backstage 110... which I've blown the speaker after a while... sounded a lot better.
No need for pedal... small amp with blown speaker.

We all do that. We're just trying to justify our choices. It's a good quality to have, psychologically speaking. Not to ruin the buzz by bringing in psychology, but apparently many of us go through that phase—as they do with selling it all. I've pretty much sold or given away everything I had when I was younger. Stripping off the old and bringing in the new. It's a young adulthood thing. Now I'm 24 I'm pretty happy with my gear.

Yeah. And it was just sitting around collecting dust. Being that I've started tinkering around with guitars, I would have loved to fix it up and put some new pickups in it etc

Crate B15 for lyfe.
It had an EQ, no matter how you set it there was really no difference. Likewise, the gain control was really just another volume knob.
Oh, Crate.
