i really want to buy one of the Dead Hipster overdrives even though i don't need another overdrive, just so i can use the phrase "i stomped on the Dead Hipster" in a sentence.

the thing i hate about the "hipster" dealie is the same thing i hate about neo-hippies and 21st-century hardcore kids...it's fucking contrived and manufactured. make something for yourselves; real freaks and real punks didn't buy their gear at fucking Urban Outfitters. real hippies in the day tie-dyed their own t-shirts, and real punks ripped up their own clothes. a true subculture can't be purchased.

That picture is nothing but hip. Jay-z is also a mother f'in hipster. Non script granny glasses and what.

Overpayed and overplayed rap stars =/= hipsters. Neo-hip-hop-chic(a term I just made up) has co-opted many of the "indie" styles of clothing since they shied away from the gangsta image. It has none of the exclusivist attitude however. It's still all about being #1, fame, fortune, bitches, notoriety, self-worship.

People hate hipsters for how they act, not how they dress. And since hipster derives from pejorative attitudes, self-obsessed rap stars, who only talk about themselves and how much everyone should like them, cannot be hipsters. Like I said, a true hipster would deny that the category of hipster even exists(or indie music as a genre). The ideology is that the only media worthy of their attention is anything that is so underground that it hasn't reached the notoriety to garner itself a classification.

I have thought about this a lot. I notice that people rarely ever talk about hipsters compared to how often they talk about people talking about hipsters.

THAT ideology leads to self-obsessiveness. "I listen to so much shit you guys have never heard of, gah I'm so cool."

i think it's harder to truly think like that nowadays, especially with the internet and itunes and everything.

but i bet there are more people with that mentality now than there were in the past. although i wouldn't know

I think that ideology is probably spawned by self-obsessiveness.

I agree with both of these statements, it's a viscous cycle. Either way, that ideology is at the core of what is a hipster. In the end, it has nothing to do with fashion. Although that is the most typical way it manifests itself. Riding fixed gear bikes would be another.

My point is that douches like Kanye's line of thought is more like, "I am the shit you should have heard of because I'm so cool." Go listen to a Kanye song and count how many times he uses the word "I" as the subject of a sentence. Their clothes my have changed, but they still reek of the same selfish, do whatever it takes to get rich, gangsta ethos.

I feel guilty posting this because nothing about this discussion irritates me(except Kanye). I really enjoy debating useless, arbitrary things.

dude.

i spent a half hour trying to find where to download darwin deez's album.

and then i listened to it and it was REALLY REALLY REALLY SHITTY EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST HALF OF RADAR DETECTOR AND A FEW PARTS OF SOME OTHER SONGS. and i'm pissed. i watched a music video too and the frontman or whatever looks like an enormous douchebag and i want to punch him really badly for letting me down so much.

i like some of the lyrics though but that does not make his music listenable or really like, likeable.
