ima be honest. im right there with you. the first 4 ff were so... perfect. i think i played every release afterward just for nostalgic purposes even tho they were all drastically different from the originals. flame away at this next comment. i reach for ff1 and ff2 before ff7.
I'ma let you finish, but FF6 is the best video game of all time.

What are some good games that will basically make me better at stuff? For example: games where you have to strategize, solve puzzles, and all the usual think on your toes and improve your hand-eye coordination..... I typically play RPGs and some action games which take care of the last couple things in my list, but what about problem solving, strategizing, and general "making the player better at 'stuff'" kind of games?

Did we actually go into everyone's top 5 games of '13?
In no order:
Metro:LL
Stanley Parable
Shadowrun Returns
Dead Space 3
Bioshock Infinite
2:3 Indiewanker to AAA douchebagger ratio isn't that bad.
Everyone's forgotten about DS3, but it has every component that gives me the biggest nerdgasm possible. Flying in 0g space, RIGs being awesome, combining 2 weapons together and wanky Sci-Fi hallways full of grubby, dirty low-tech science stuff.

oooh lists! I fucking love lists!
no particular order
Link Between Worlds
Nuclear Throne
DayZ Alpher (dealwithit)
Prison Architect
Stanley Parable
I'm that insufferable indie gamer. I can't think of anything besides LoZ from the AAA camp that piqued my interest this year.

Haven't got around to finishing Zelda, but from i've played to far I really like it, it's really evenly paced.

Did Papers, Please come out this year? That was interesting for a couple of runs but it's not a game I'd wanna play again.

^FTL came out in 2012 bro
Shadowrun Returns
Tales of Maj'Eyal. Yeah yeah yeah it's been around for a while but it got a Steam release and version 1.0 in december so I'm counting it.
Not gonna lie, I basically played ToME all fuckin year to the near complete exclusion of all other games. It's a rad game.
I definitely still want to try out the stanley parable, papers please and a few others, I just... never bothered.

I've tried tome on and off, but just can't get into it. It just can't match crawl. Crawl ruined roguelikes for me :/
I haven't played any 2013 games yet.

I used to play crawl tons a couple of years ago, I absolutely loved it, and when I first tried ToME I disliked it because it was too different to crawl. Then gradually I switched between the two and now ToME is my favourite by a long, long way. I still play crawl occasionally and keep up with development a bit because I do love the game, but I don't enjoy playing as much anymore. Funny how opinions change like that!

I had a full blown crawl addiction that lasted a few years. I have 63(?) online wins and a few offline, including every race and background, and every possible draconian. That's a lot of time sunk. It's only since september or so that I've been able to stop playing, but my hyper-familiarity with crawl still haunts any other roguelike I consider picking up.

Holy crap! I snagged 6 or 7 wins over about a year and a half of very, very solid playing. I was definitely pretty addicted for a while, then the last year I've nursed a crazy ToME addiction. They're super different games but I definitely consider both of them the most solidly developed and professional feeling roguelikes, so they've kind of ruined all other roguelikes for me (bar the occasional bit of nethack, but I've been so spoiled by the modern touches I do find it tough)... Should have started with something else.
