first off, never letting them DI me live again if i can help it. FUCK the Shure 52 sounds GOOD. i spaced who recommended it, but THANK YOU. woof.
so.... i'm getting a CRAZY quiet signal. like, i have the input volume in the Motu 828's software all the way up, the mic input boost all the way up, the Beta52 a couple inches from the speaker in my cab, the head turned up loud enough to be uncomfortable to listen to in the room i'm recording, and i get it to go 1/4 of the way towards the red. conversly, if it's lining in to the same input, i have to have input boost at less than half or it clips.
what am i doing wrong? i picked up a cheapie Art tube preamp (dooder that's actually knowledgable at GC told me to try it) to put in front of the Motu, see if that helps.... is that necessary?
i'm an IDIOT about mic'ing. first time i've tried it.
mewwwwww?
I think it was jrmy and I that recomm'd the beta 52, so you're welcome

Yeah, you definitely need to run the mic into a pre first. Most mic's run at a really low level, like -20-25 dB at best. You're gonna need a pre to boost it quite a bit to get up to line level. The ART tube preamp is actually pretty nice. My fav mic preamp in a reasonable price range is actually the EHX. Sorry Behndy, I know how you feel about EHX. But their mic pre is actually really fuckin nice.

hurm. cool. i'll look at the EHX i guess. is it a pedal or a desktop unit? awesome would be something cheap, reliable, and doesna color the tone as much as possible. i lurv the sounds i get out of my rig. trying to stay as close to that as i can i guess?

Scandinavian metal band...can't remember the name offhand, but their bass player goes in for seriously oddball 2-string basses (I think he builds some of them himself).

It's in the same size box as the English Muff'n, but it doesn't have a stomp switch, so I guess you can't really call it a pedal. The tubes do a tad bit of fattening and slight compression, but I wouldn't say that it colors your sound all that much.

OHHH WAIT!!!! NOW I GET IT!!!1!11!!
You're running your mic straight into your interface!?
it's pretty obvious that there isn't much juice getting into your pc..... I thought you were using a mixer or something

... or at least an interface with preamp or stuff build in...
Ohh god... today is a pretty slow day for me, as you can tell...

i THOUGHT on the Motu 828 (it's a MK II), the two spots that are Instrument/Mic and have a combo xlr and 1/4 inch input had a pre. if it does, maybe it's a shitt/quiet 'un? again, mic idiot, ME.
gonna give the Art a try when i get home, if it sounds different i'll pick up that EHX and try it. thanks dawg.
24: Come on! They have one female servicing a large group of males. That implies a species that lays eggs.
21: Oh my God, you're crazy! They're so obviously mammals!
24: Please! She'd be in estrus 24/7 if she didn't lay eggs.
21: Smurfs don't lay eggs! I won't tell you this again! Papa Smurf has a fucking beard! They're mammals!

WHY WOULD YOU EVEN DOOOO THAAATTTT??!?

that. that is why i would do that.
"and then you will TOTALLY be having sex."

One of my favorite scenes,....I find that it helps if you just listen to the audio and ignore the live acting bad voice over/dub shits.
Also,...I've only seen seasons one and two,...got season three on the way.
