Yeah, the Walrus Audio pedal demos on youtube really turned me off to their brand, even though the pedal art is kinda neat?

i am resisting the urge to say mean things about those motorave guitars so i will just say that this is the only one that is even remotely appealing to me. and it has nothing to do with josh homme.

something different with demo videos...

I dunno, I liked some of the classic rock riffs that the dude in trucker hat + beard was doing. The other two dudes in that video..

Trust me, I've had my share of "crappy stuff", I promise you.
Also, I probably have like 10 years on you dudes of working day in and day out so a little more expendable income. I'd say the majority here have far better shit than I did in high school or college, totally gear staved back then. Then I graduated and let loose.

Yeah, I just bought a Walrus Audio Iron Horse and apparently the guys behind those pedals are hipsters with no intelligence or creativity. That's called not doing your research and having money to spare. Still, I hope it sounds as good as the demos. It'll be easily flippable if not.
skullservant wrote:I'm sorry but I cannot give you a single reason NOT to go for those angled Mustang looking guitars. DAYUM. How much are they? Must cost quite a lot

That one is around $3300. The Les Paul-ish one and the Gretsch-ish one are both four and a half grand. Josh Homme uses the big-ass one.
I jumped on that Walrus Audio hype train for a minute with the Voyager, then returned it. Cosmetics drew me in, sounded alright, think it's some form of Timmy clone in the end. The Iron Horse is a modded RAT, think it was the EQ they altered. I always hear good about that one tho. I completely agree, the Walrus guys definitely lack creativity when it comes to their product beyond sexy cosmetics.
Nothing wrong with improving on circuits, pimping 'em out with features, some of my favorite fuzz/dirt pedals and amps have been born in exactly that way. Walrus doesn't seem to bring much new beyond some new sexy looks tho and like mathias noted, their demos AND website seemed highly contrived right outta the gates. It's like they weren't as concerned with making pedals as they were with establishing a hip new brand. Someone noted here once that the Walrus website looks like Urban Outfitters and that shit was spot on haha! For what it's worth, I hear they worked for Keeley originally and gained some experience, then jumped ship and started Walrus Audio.
And yeah, the MotorAve stuff is super cool, I'd love to get a chance to try one in person. Just so pricey. That semi hollow Homme rocks is like $4650 if I remember correctly.

I tried out a Walrus Mayflower, it was cool, looked great, but I didn't really need it. Just got the Janus. I actually like it a lot more than I expected, but it is fucking HUGE and I am still not sure if I am keeping it. The fuzz and trem both sound cool, and the inability to get super precise settings to stick around with the joysticks is not that annoying, it's kind of a plus, for a little unpredictability. Either way it's fun.

That's how I was with the Voyager, just didn't need it but it looked so good I ended up buying it. I at least came around and returned it.
I've been interested to hear some Janus feedback tho....

Truth be told I haven't had as much time with the Janus as I would like, so the jury is still out. I actually bought it more for use with my Korg Monotribe than guitar, but on first pass it sounded better on guitar than I expected. There is some output discrepancy between the level and blend pots on the fuzz I can't wrap my mind around yet, and I wish the trem had a blend as well as level instead of just level. Throwing EXP control on the blend of either fuzz or trem would've knocked it out of the park, but oh well. Like I said, it's cool, and is eye-catching. My girlfriend likes it (which is always a plus at the rate I turn over gear

) and last night the drummer I play with was just staring at it and says "that thing looks INSANE."

Same here... I'm into boutique stuff only since 2 - 3 years. Only had crap as a teenager.

Haha. I went through my entire teens and the beginning of college with only the Arion Metal Master (last seen on my nano board in the pedalboards thread) and had no idea how to make it sound good then. (Protip: turn the gain down, don't scoop all the frequencies)
Edit: oh, and I waas playing it mostly an Epiphone Les Paul Special II into solidstate peavey practice amps.. so much toans.

I have to agree with this. The demos, at first, were obviously laughable. The musicians were the apotheosis of hipsters. And seeing as you don't see many of them in the countryside of Ireland, where I live, they're quite a humorous site when I travel to Dublin or Galway to see a show. But the fact that they weren't wanking over blues or jazz tracks was refreshing to say the least. The demo that pushed me to buy the Iron Horse was the most recent PGS demo. That knarly midrange made me miss my old RAT clone by Montgomery Appliances, so I picked one up for cheap.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I love the way they look. It did take me a while to get sucked into it, though, so I can say that.
Urban Outfitters, that is actually a damn good comparison. I thought their website just looked lame. Maybe that's the purposeāit's ironic.
Have you noticed recently a surge in demo quality? I see some guys with five HD cameras filming different angles at the same time. Or they'll record the audio and then overdub the video with various panoramic views. It's like, dude, just play the guitar, you don't need to go to such effort. Don't get wrong, it's awesome to see things stepping up from Gearmanndude and his terribly thin audio or just people with an iPhone 3S, but don't overdo it. Demo the pedal and be done with it.

The gaming sticks would be better for messing with loops or synthesizers, right?

I started getting into boutique amps around five or six years ago (I spent around $2500 on a Framus Dragon and 4x12), but I didn't start collecting pedals until around three and half years ago. It was totally different back then. Finding guys like Walrus Audio was really hard, which is maybe a good thing, depending on your outlook. Not to mention, Toneczar, Red Witch, and Dr. Scientist were some of the only guys doing anything different in the boutique world. Most of it was Klon and OCD obsession.

^ That guitar is hot.
When I was playing in bands my gear was:
-Washburn RS-8V (guitar)
-Marshall JCM 900 dual reverb (amp... I hate Marshall since then).
-BOSS BE5, BOSS GE7 and BOSS MT2
Now that I don't have much time for a band I have some cool stuff.
