Yea but I don't mean to sound like a dick, ancient, but you weren't playing honestly all that fast at least not to what I'm talking about.

maggot wrote:That makes sense, although I think you're probably going for a livelier sound from the kick. Basically went for the early Bill Ward setup: 22" kick, normal-sized snare, giant floor tom. He had a normal-size rack tom, though, and I had a 16" (sometimes a 14"). I woulda liked a 24" kick but mainly because it looks more badass. Except for the snares, ride cymbal and pedals, I made it out of hand me downs from "real" drummers (who for some reason would never actually play). At first I wrapped it for uniformity, then I stripped it and stained it for the same. I miss drums!

I'm definitely going for a lively sound. I like resonance and sustain in my drums, un like a lot of metal drummers who want the exact opposite.

That's awesome on the wrapping and then stripping the kit, its crazy how much you can change while it still being the same kit.

I don't think I've posted much if anything of me playing in Lord so how would you know how fast or what I'm playing? If your referring to SBO, I did not play drums in that project.

If your talking about 220+ bpm blast beats then drum size is an irrelevant and moot point as even 22" acoustic drums can't keep up with those speeds hence the reason why they all use triggers.

that's what I was thinking of. but yea smaller drums tuned tighter are able to. esp if you pair it with a wooden beater. I mean we can argue back and forth all day long or just drop it. I don't think it's going to make much difference cause the outcome will remain the same.

A lot of metal drummers sound like they're playing typewriters, which they probably should be doing if they're gonna sound like that, cuz then they wouldn't have to haul around that double bass setup. The Fear Factory sound!

I like a thud with a good bit of head sound, partly because it's easier to tune. I'd let it ring out a bit more if I was setting one up today, so it'd mix with the band better and have more presence.

Gotcha, SBO drums is Kerch (Lord / Palkoski (The Seventh Gate) Vocalist, Ancient Astronaught / Nanshe Drummer) who adamantly plays single kick in anything he does.

Yeah theres no point in arguing it, with drums theres so many things you can do to attain a certain desired attribute. What works for some doesn't work for others.

Agreed, and a good percentage of those guys still use triggers even with those doubel bass setups making it almost pointless. The only upside is left foot pedal response is definitely far superior with a dual kick / dual single pedal setup in comparison to a double bass pedal. But with proper setup a double bass pedal can get you pretty damn close.

It is definitely easier to tune that way. I like a good thud but full sustain. Its alot more upkeep as far as tuning your drums but to me it fills out the sound so much better and sounds more natural and less mechanical. I like my toms to be DOOooooh not DOH, that sustain / resonance between hits fills the void of not hitting anything in slower passages and makes the drums sound fuller and livlier in fast bits.

What do you guys think of this kit? 20"x28" kick, 13"x15" tom and 16"x18" floor tom. I was checking out deeper bass drums and came upon this last year. I dig what I hear.

It needs a 20" floor instead of an 18, and it needs to be acrylic. Other then that It sounds wicked. I watched that video a few times when deciding on a new kit.

Yes! I was also searching for 20" floor toms at the same time while looking for deeper bass drums. I plan on doing keller shells in these sizes if I can get my drummer on board. For now we have to settle with what we have.

Yea cause there is always that element of the drummer that contributes what I feel a huge percentage like 80% of what you hear behind a drumkit. the rest is the gear itself. I've heard amazing drummers using literal toy Sears kits sound massive.

hell most of the shows I played on drums I was unmiced and I never used triggers and I would have people coming up asking if I was cause they could hear everything so clearly and loudly over the guitars. I always said do you see me with a ton of gear or wires on my kit or even the triggering pads themselves?

Do you really want the kick to be 20" deep if it's gonna be a 28"? Part of the reason a lot of those giant marching drums sound responsive while having such huge heads is because they're 12" deep. AA's the expert, but it seems to me that at a certain point, there'd be just too much air in there.

My friend Melissa usually plays a normal rock-size kit and has a kinda Bonhamesque style. Her backup kit is an 18" bebop set and she doesn't really lose much when she plays it.

I dunno why I can abide by all kinds of guitar FX madness , but I can't abide by triggers. When someone says that some guitar equipment that I'm using is a crutch, I want to puke on them. But part of the drum drama is about projection and finesse, even when the drummer is just OK. Acoustic drums are just so glorious.

yeah im gonna just settle like a pussy for a Bonham kit. woe is me.

BUT if that 30" bass drum that's for sale in las vegas was any closer to me that would be a different story

I really like my 26x14" bass drum. It has a huge sound, but isn't sloppy. Some super large bass drums sound like you are in an industrial garage, and someone is throwing shoes at an aluminum garage door. I am not saying that a 18-20" deep, larger size bass drum will sound horrible, but it can get a little wild. That, and deep bass drums take up a fair amount of stage space. Even though my Ludwig bass drum is a bigger drum, it is shallower than all my previous 16" depth Tama bass drums, making it slightly more accommodating when setting up.
