And I've never really found lighter strings brighter, I think that's maybe just the new string sound?

I think so, but don't thinker strings generate slightly more output? That's kind of the reasoning I'm going with here.

and for the record, this has nothing to do with wanting to shred. Moody post-punk bands don't need shredding.

I figured out how to get clearer tone earlier. Turns out that if you rub cream cheese onto the pickups, it'll dim the clean enough that when it hits the gain stages, it still gets a thick tone, but you can hear everything ring out pretty well.
