SORRY GUYS I WAS DRUNK, and wrote death. I meant Black, please don't kill me, you can my first born's blood in a gold chalice.

Thanks for the suggestions, I know about Deafheaven but didn't want to touch them because the hip kids love them, claiming they "Are the final point of Metal." I also had WiTTR's "Celestial Lineage" ripped on my computer and I forgot I liked it.

And the Botanist song is cool, and I want more of that.

You didn't like the Leviathan record?

Deafheaven's only redeeming factor is that Jfrey likes them and Jfrey is a cool dude (he also hipped me to the newest Botanist record, which is great):

I think Deafheaven has nice mixes, the over all sound is likable. Botanist has better songs sure but I don't like the way the drums sit on this one.

This is really great too if you wanna ease in to the genre a bit more. More on the depressive/atmospheric side, but it has superb dynamics. Lots of peaks and valleys.

A) the vocals kill me. Most of the time, the singing is just a hiss to me.
B) NO dynamics. I'm a bitch and like quiet/loud/quiet/LOUD stuff.

So, that said, is their a way to get more into Black metal? Are there "black metal-lite" bands? I feel fucking wack asking this.

Edited because I'm an idiot and meant black not death.
I'd recommend checking out Deathspell Omega, Watain, MGLA, Ondskapt, Cultes Des Ghoules, Nightbringer and a recent favorite Pale Chalice.

Always worth a repost:
PORTLAND, Ore. — Deafheaven’s bassist, Stephen Clark, was lulled to sleep in the middle of his band’s Red Bull Sound Select show in Portland last night. Some might think this would be cause for teasing, but critics are already raving that Clark slept through Deafheaven’s ambient shoegaze black-metal bullshit perfectly.

“It was a flawless performance. Just absolutely flawless. These guys are creating a new genre,” one critic wrote on his Pitchfork worship blog. “When he started snoring I knew I was witnessing the best set of the year.”

And he wasn’t the only critic out there who enjoyed the set.

“They are just so dark. I’ve never seen anything like it. I can’t even wrap my head around how they get so dark,” another critic wrote before concluding that the band must put something in their wash.

Clark explained his predicament to reporters outside the show.

“I was standing there, laying down the bass line for ‘Vertigo’ when I felt this warm calmness wash over my body. It was like I was all wrapped up in one of our signature Deafheaven Blankets©, being gently rocked from side to side,” he said. “It was so cozy that I thought I’d just close my eyes for a second.”

The next thing Clark remembers is Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy kicking him in the ass and yelling “this isn’t fucking funny” while the band attempted to finish the song. “I was tired, too, but I would never fall asleep on stage,” said McCoy. “This isn’t a fucking joke. Everyone was laughing. It’s not a joke. It’s not fucking funny. We’re creating a new genre.”

Deafheaven is no stranger to controversy. After cancelling a tour due to lost luggage containing all of their black clothes, the band had their rider leaked to the public with it stating that each band member requires three lint rollers before taking the stage. A picture of the vocalist, George Clarke, also went viral several months ago when he too was accused of falling asleep mid-performance.

The Hard Times reached out to the Deafheaven vocalist for comment but his response was too low in the mix for us to understand.

Yeah this is real good.

Also if you're a fan of Krallice and want to step up the dissonance and chaos even more, try Mastery: https://theflenser.bandcamp.com/album/valis

Black Metal-lite? Maybe Violet Cold's EP? Mix some catchy synth lines in with gazey black metal, instrumental version also available: https://violetcoldofficial.bandcamp.com ... ate-dreams

Other stuff I've been digging lately:

Thy Darkened Shade: https://wtcproductions.bandcamp.com/alb ... hem-sedjet

Sorrow Plagues: https://sorrowplagues.bandcamp.com/albu ... f-solitude

Latest Leviathan is still one of my top albums of the year: https://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.co ... ar-sighted

New Locrian is also killer: https://locrian.bandcamp.com/album/infinite-dissolution

Annndd my Myrkur album came in the mail yesterday, gave it a spin and was pretty satisfied, solid 7/10 for me.
