subject for another thread but: is Eardrum distortion a thing? or just one of my make-em ups?

Yeah, it really does feel like yr ears are distorting.
Maybe I'm uncool or whatever, but it really bothers me when shit is so loud that it messes my hearing up, even if it's "temporary". I gotta start wearing earplugs or something.

do it. I've been wearing them at shows for a few years now and thought it was making a huge difference. Then I started wearing them at practice as well. It sounds stupid but not coming home with ringing ears is something I hadn't experienced in the 15 years or so I've been playing in bands.

I've been wearing them at gigs and practice for 3 years or so. When I forget them I really hate myself hahah. But that being said, sometimes there are bands you just want to destroy your ears..

When people say "Orange tone", I think of two very different things: OR120 and Rockerverb 100. But always OR120 first because it's just a better amp in almost every way and the original Orange construction and hallmark. That's just my opinion of course. YMMV and all that jazz. :)

you're totally right. the 6v6 cleans and the gainy crunch are nothing like what you get in the classic orange tone. but the cleans are never gonna match up against my hiwatt (and eventually a JTR), and the gain I can get out of the markV puts the orange to shame. In general I'm not a big fan of high gain anyways - when you play loud enough you get ear drum distotion, so who needs amp distortion anyways :p . I'm really happy about the trade (and if the mesa doesn't work out I'm sure I can sell it for more then I would have gotten for the orange, right? :idk: ). I've never owned an amp for such a short period.

I often forget about any Orange stuff past the 90's reissue stuff... even then, the 90's reissue Orange stuff was made by Matamp..

I think of an OR120 when I think of the "Orange sound" for sure.

Not saying that all the new Orange stuff is bad or anything... I just forget that it even exists a lot of the time haha. I tried a TH100 and it was that whole "5150 high gain" thing. I really didn't like it, that being said, I wasn't trying it in a band that would pull off the high gain thing.
I would love to try a AD200B MK 3.

sort of off topic but, I really want to try a 70's Orange Superbass... or even the reissue from the 90's, never seen either for sale before.

isn't the orange superbass just an OR120 with a 12AU7 tubes (for cleaner tone) in the preamp gain stage instead of a 12AX7?

something like that from what I gather!

I've never been able to get much info/tried one/seen one for sale.

I don't think your eardrum distorts. I remember reading about the ear and how it hears sounds, but if I remember rightly, the structure of it just doesn't allow for distortion. I could be wrong there so correct me if I am, but distortion is the cut-off of the peak; the compression. How would an ear do this? The volume level that can permanently damage (roughly 120db and beyond) doesn't eventually distort, at least from what I can tell.

You should always wear ear plugs at shows. The human ear isn't designed to accept that kind of volume level. If you don't care about it then that's totally cool, I understand. I personally want to be able to buy a record at 60 and still hear the nuances of it without a hearing aid.

I didn't even know that amp ever existed. To be honest, though, it doesn't surprise me. Orange have released a lot of amps over the years, most of which are just reissues or slight variations on old designs.

its actually just a basic OR model but with even larger coupling caps (68nF to 100nF), small component value changes to the james/bax EQ, small changes to FAC to also cut some high end as well.

Dropping that knowledge!

Reposting the current rig pic, because I very rarely take photographs of my gear and it's nice to be able to contribute.

you could drop a 12au7 in V1 of any OR model, the stages are optimized for them but it will work, and decrease gain a lot!
