Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I'm kind of over Les Pauls in general. I still love an SG, still got my favorite version too. In general though I've found I really like Fender style guitars...or at the very least bolt neck and 25.5" scale.
I'm cool with Marshalls. Not for everything, for some things. One Fender and one Marshall style amp would do me for pretty much everything guitar related. Right now I have a 50w single channel Showman clone that's dead clean and awesome for dirt pedals...and my Dunwich custom amp, Mr. Grumpy. Which is good for dirty bass and clean guitar with pedals. I will never sell that amp, it's nuts. Can't do guitar gain though, really.

i'm kind of at a stopping point with gear. i haven't heard anything new in at least a year and a half that cried out "put me on your board NOW!" and i've got most of my guitar bases covered, though i'd still like a Gretsch with Filtertrons in, a Strat with the bridge set up to float (my Strat i have now is set up with the bridge flat and 5 springs on the vibrato), an Epiphone Explorer, and maybe a fretted bass. a quieter amp than the Laney would also be nice. but i really don't NEED any of those things.

So crucial! I want a bunch of stuff always, but I have more than enough stuff to make music I want to make.dubkitty wrote:but i really don't NEED any of those things.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
Yeah, if I really wanted to I could just use Mr. Grumpy, a few different cabs and some pedals for all things amp related (bass and guitar). I'm limited to dead clean pedal platform that way though. My house would fall down on me before the power tubes broke up on that amp. Although there is some preamp dirt on tap and I have a slave input for the power amp, if I ever wanted to plug a different preamp into it.coldbrightsunlight wrote: That's what pedals are for no?I'm very much a clean(ish) amp and pedals person. Which makes finding "the right amp" easy as it's just "an amp loud enough to break up a nice amount but not too much when I play gigs)
It works great for some sounds, ok for others. Never bad. That amp is not going anywhere either way, though I wouldn't mind keeping it dedicated solely to heavy/doom stuff with my Dunwich pedals. I have a definitive and great sound for that application with what I've got now. If I sold every piece of gear not in that realm and just bought another big guitar cab (used to have an Atlas 612 for it), I'd be set. I can't settle on one style of music though, I'm too flighty.

Haha yeah couldn't settle on just ONE sound. I have a small tube amp that I never touch the gain channel on which works great for 90% of my guitar music. If I want to be real heavy I use my bass amp.
Good setup. Only thing I might need if our band starts gigging is a more powerful bass head just in case of things going wrong with the sound.

And here's why I'm kind of hoarding instruments and pedals: most of the keepers push me in another musical direction. When I sit at this synth or play through that pedal, I get new great ideas that I hadn't gotten through a constant and - for me - restrictive setup. And there are indeed some units that produce a sound that I cannot get elsewhere and that I love to use more often than once in a year only.coldbrightsunlight wrote:No point in restricting yourself so much you can't actually do the musical things you want to

I'm dropping into GC after work, going to check out some combo amps and guitars. Maybe it will stimulate a gear purge, maybe it will make me stay the course. Updates to follow, whenever.

it's probably a good thing that we don't have a decent music shop in C'ville...it keeps me away from impulse buys.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
The last time I impulse bought a piece of gear was probably 10+ years ago, at least. I happened upon a Marshall JCM800 2204 in a shop for $400. I asked the guy at the counter where the nearest ATM was and if he could hold it behind the counter for me. When I came back the manager came out and says "uhhh...that was labeled incorrectly, it's not supposed to be that price, but since it was on the floor and he pulled it for you, if you pay for it right now you can have it. If you leave and come back though, it's going to be marked up to the correct price". So I handed him the cash and walked out with it...and he seemed MAD.
I sold that amp a few years later for like $600 too, which was still a crazy deal for the guy who bought it...but I made money, so fuck it.

That's a nice story!
I'm in the 99% of ppl group that goes to GC to buy picks only, maybe a strap or strings because fuck it.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
If I can stretch my memory, I think this is what I've bought at Guitar Center in the last...15ish years:
Ampeg 810e (which I still have), at a crazy discount because I had a friend working there (who only worked there THAT week)
Fender MIM Precision (which I bought for a backup to the Ric I used to have, but ended up becoming my main bass for a long time)
Paiste 18" crash cymbal, that I had for years until I sold all my drum gear a few years ago. (also got on an employee discount via a friend of a friend)
I think that's it. When a built my own P bass, I had it setup at GC on a recommendation for a specific person, who did a great job. My local one has some cool used stuff, haven't bought anything there yet in the last year.
