I do all my recording mixed down to one stereo track. I also always had a mixer in my rack and never worked with a DAW beyond hitting record in Audacity and maybe adding in a fade in or out

guyyyyyys i think he means recording SEPARATE tracks with fades/mutes in the recording, not down to a stereo track.

down to a stereo track is EASY.
Sure, but in theory you should be able to do this with a Matrix mixer as long as each has a separate output and volume, no?

I am mega tired but this should be ez pz... which means I'm probs misunderstanding what the desired outcome is.

Yeah this is what I was thinking when I wrote the above, sorry I'm operating at a sleepy pace. why not try this first and see if the results are acceptable to you before going after another piece of gear?

I don’t own an outboard mixer but I’ve narrowed down a few that have post and pre fader individual puts so I may do that if I don’t go Frap Tools CGM

hurm. what you looking at? i would TOTES be into a tiny second mixer for when i want to record fades and mutes.

Have them listed at the office so will have to let you know tomorrow. Was thinking I wanted a digital one so I could use it for mixing too but it’s just getting too complicated so I think I have the one if I go this route but it’s not that tiny either...

I think of it like this, you’re either masterfully nailing your mix live and just recording the left and right sends, or you are a miserable failure and multi-track to your DAW where you later go back and take your time with the mix. I don’t really see the need for the have it both ways crowd. Ok wait, Behndy told me why he wants to do this, and not to throw him under the bus but the reasoning is trivial compared to the hassle and expense.

I think for what Behndy told me he wants to do (short live videos when the groove is in the magic zone) it would be best to just take a post fader mix, and if it’s not perfectly right just re-record it. If you were working on something that was ‘very important’ or whatever that means to you, I think at this point you want raw multi-tracks in your DAW. Post fader will just limit what you can do in edits.

It is possible that the advice you are getting here might have used the word destructive and you thought the word degraded. It should be possible to use a mixer in line between your Euro and DAW and not degrade anything, but your edits will be destructive, meaning you can’t undo them in post production. Apologies if I’m making wrong assumptions here.

Another option that might work but I’ve never tried it: in your DAW set up an equal number of bus channels as you are tracking, get a midi controller with enough knobs or faders or whatever, set up the controller to affect your individual tracks send level to the bus, monitor only the bus’ed channels so you can hear what you’re doing with fader movements. Now you have raw tracks, post fader tracks, a post fader mix to monitor, and everything left over when you’re done to remix however you like.

the BUSSSSSSSSSSS she is APPPPPPPPROOOOOOACHHHHHHHIIINNNNNNNNNNG.

zero offense taken homie.

i like the MIDI DAW bus manipulation, but i get wary of adding another piece like that..... just because i have had SO many problems over the years with soft/hard interface controllers like that. mebbe they're rock solid now.

heh. soft. HARD. ROCK SOLID. WORD SMITH. I AMMMMMMM.

for me it's that i like to play with the stereo mix after, and there's always a slightly different bump in volume somewhere that i want before i post something. even with Quickie One Offs.

hehhehheheheehhh they just don't STOP.

CAPITAN INNUENDO. YESHHHHHHH.

Yeah the one cool daw midi controller I had actually didn’t work. Lol. It mostly worked but a few key features had been broken by a MacOS update that I had installed long before I bought the controller. I’m sure they got it fixed eventually but fuck, they were months late already, I didn’t want to stick around and wait.

Edit: I would be wary of the ones that offer some sort of custom/deep DAW integration, but a simple bank of MIDI knobs or faders should be fine. :idk:

yur. the easiest/cheapest to try would probably be one fo the smaller Korg or Behringer MIDI knobs. got a few MODULES to buy, then going to look at that.

also, SOMEONE SELL ME THEIR NATURAL GATE PLEASE DO IT YESHHHH LOVE YOU.

finally plugged up the Stereo Field. i dunno, i dig it so far? could be a bit more verbose, but it's interesting to fuck around with.

I see you're manipulating the Digitakt's output yeah? Are you also controlling ya modular with it? How does it fare as an actual instrument?
