I listened to like the best free jazz driving to my Grandparent's house a couple weeks ago. Didn't get the name...don't remember the station so I can't cruise their archive...real shame. There was two horn doing the same scaling but one was slightly out of tune with the other so it sort of inter modulated with each other. Really cool use of silence too. Any one have any suggestions for something like that?

Also, going down a Braxton black hole lately.

Sounds interesting? Backing band? Modal with free play up top, or total freeform? Your description makes me think of a free jazz equivalent of Steve Reich's phasing stuff.

Last cd I bought for myself (this summer? damn I've just become fully post cd-buyer I think) was a recent Braxton 4 cd set for like six bucks...great way to go out....

Love this early Clarence side with Satch and Sid together pre-revival era:

Yeah, those Clarence Williams bands were great.

Also, I did not know that he's buried in Farmingdale. :idk:

Braxton is a black hole. :snax:

You definitely should've found out what you were listening to. Now I'm curious. From what you're describing maybe Steve Lacy comes to mind.

The backing band could be just as over the top and sparse as the two horns. Just drums and a bass (I think). Yes, modal play up top. It would go freeform, kind of comeback together, and then the weird intermodulation thing.

The station was cutting in and out so that kind of added something (I like noisy stuff  )

15:06 is another example. Love parts like that.
I seriously can't believe this just happened...
"Your arrangements for two horns seem to be very… well, dissonant is the wrong word, but you know what ! mean - you use unusual intervals.

Well, almost everything I've written for quite a few years now is in seconds. It's like one line, but it's thickened by another line quite adjacent to it. There are two kinds of seconds, major and minor, and they both fall into what's known as dissonant category, which is a useless category. Actually, to me they ring like bells if they're in the right order, if they're placed right and if they're pitched right. However, it's much more complicated than that and I couldn't explain it really - I mean, I could show you on the paper and all that, but it doesn't matter. It's a way of thickening the single line or it's a way of speaking with a forked tongue, if you like."

^Good find on that.

Yeah, very difficult to beat that combo of Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd.

Here's some good stuff with Steve Lacy and Third Person:

I posted "Trickles" earlier in the thread. Both the version from that album and a solo version.

Here's another version of "Clinkers" :
