im so glad we have a I<3drums thread or I would be forced to sign up to....drumming forums -shudder-

"bros I need drums to be heard along with a kilowatt plus of tube amps....."

-crickets-

except every drummer that's played with me (TWSS) when ive been rowdy and really pushed it has pretty much told me to go fuck myself cause they cant even hear themselves.

skip that's fuckin hot. what sizes?

and dat pokemon sticker. . .

26x16" kick
18x16" floor
14x9" rack

Dark Horse brand, keller shells. :thumb:

oh and yeah I've tried numerous drum forums and they are all horrible just horrible.... I got banned from one for using the same avatar as I have here

Road Bull wrote:Cool! I can't wait to hear your impressions on what they sound like. Looks like a fun kit to play.

@whiskey I would say get the 26" unless you want to be super technical. They are plenty loud. I can actually hear my bass drum over all the amps at practice. This is physically damn near impossible with smaller over muffled drums. No one has any difficulty hearing my cymbals. The hunt begins.

I will definitely report back, maybe even do a video demo :yay:

also I concur with your sentiments.

ShaolinLambKiller wrote:I always maintain the stance that playing heavier does equal to being louder. Any time I had an issue of not being heard, I practiced till I played harder naturally. It didn't happen often I was drowned out.

I agree, but some drums are naturally louder. You don't "need" acrylic drums to be heard like a mofo, but combine both hitting harder and acrylic drums and :doom:

Got a lead on a possible buyer for my current Pearl kit, which means I might be able to order a matching 8x14" Aluminum snare from Dark Horse. :yay:

Oh I agree totally that drums vary from make and material. But I always like to start at the base and move out from there. :thumb:

If you want that JB effect, I suppose there are two ways to go about it. I would say the size of the drums have a lot to do with the sound. But with new heads and good tuning you can get a pretty mediocre drum kit to sound great. You can't change the way cymbals sound , besides maybe making the quieter with tape or something. If you go this route then who makes the drum you are hitting isn't that important at all.

But if you want either an acrylic kit, or a specific manufacturer, then that kit will become your white whale, holy grail. Then good luck and happy hunting Ahab. I will keep my eyes open for the white waters and water spouts. : )

Don't be one of them guys that has 5-10k worth of drums and can't play worth a shit. The ones I know don't even come off their cymbals cause they figure at some point they will wake up and play amazingly....not like the off time idiots they really are.

im not planning on it, I actually feel like I have pretty solid ass timing (doesn't everyone lmao) and I feel like im progressing. now if I could just hit the bass drum quickly AND evenly AND have the stamina.

well if you feel solidily about it and feel you are progressing then shit... get you some good good.

I always liked surprising people when I showed up with my cheap ass kit that in it's last days was being held together with string and tape and then getting all the compliments on not just my playing but how good my kit sounded because I actually knew how to tune and play them properly to get the most out of them.

Soooooo last night was the first practice with the new kit (but not with new heads...):

Image

The rack tom placement is not ideal but the optimount bracket has not arrived yet (due in today I believe) but it worked for last night. I also realized having the rack tom lower and flatter did not cause my hands to hurt like I had been talking about, plus I've been using pro-marks, so I'm gonna watch how my hands / arms feel over the next few weeks before heading to the doctor.

As far as the kit it sound freaking killer, the kick drum is absolutely nuts. Sooo much punch and low end. The toms are killer too, lots and lots of attack and punch with a good amount of low end. I think it will get even better once I get the new heads on and I don't have the rack tom on a snare stand (as it kills ALL sustain :grumpy: ).

Strangely I noticed that my footwork was alot better and easier and I didn't even change around my pedals. It's like its got the proper kind of rebound now so I don't have to work as hard and I can now play faster. :idk: I would think going to a bigger drum would make things more awkward and harder to do but for some reason I guess not this time! :yay:

WOE!!![b] Those are RAD! :!!!:

I bet that is one hell of a change for you. I know it was for me to get drums that big. They look like they bring the thunder! As far as bass drum action. Some people don't dig the 26" because if you bury the beater against the head, it can bounce back and give you a sort of sloppy ghost note. I don't really play like that so I don't notice it that much. I will say that When the 810 cab a few feet away is rumbling, the heads pick it up and if my beater is somewhat close, I can feel the head slap against the beater. It can take some getting used to as far as the drum placement goes. The rack tom can feel like it is sitting way out in left field. I have had good success just using a Pearl snare stand. It had the height that I like. I had always played with my rack tom mounted. So I don't mind having it brought up and snug next to the bass drum. But I could also be happy with flying it off a cymbal stand or something I suppose.

I am glad you dig em. Looks fun to play.

Thanks duderonamy!

It is a change but its also not the first 26" kick kit I've owned, and the toms are the same size as my previous kit so its not a huge jump but its definitely noticeable. That bounce back ghost note you describe really fits into my style apparently because I noticed a definite and immediate improvement in my feet. I didn't have to put my leg into it as much to get it to cut through and the rebound allowed me to play faster double bass with less fatigue. :idk: As far as the rack tom it was out in left field and felt good for some slower stuff but overall felt like it was asking my arms to reach too much when I've purposely been setting up the kit for minimal movement to help my back. Luckily the optimount came in with all my heads and new sticks earlier this week so I'm going to set everything up again before practice this sunday and I'll take some new pics, but that rack tom is def going back where it was on my last kit just a lil further back as it definitely helped minimize back pain.

Thanks man! They most definitely are! and the entire badn through out the first jam session kept looking at me and giving me the thumbs up so they definitely approve.
