i know. i've tried and tried to like him, but the only stuff of his i've ever heard that's even remotely bearable is the French/Frith/Kaiser/Thompson project, which is pretty much Richard with an incredibly weird band. even the Grateful Dead covers project with Tom Constanten, the keyboardist from Anthem of the Sun and Live/Dead, was grating and unpleasant to a degree that's difficult with material as major-key and consonant as the early GD catalog. i have the same thing with Derek Bailey...people WORSHIP him, but i listen to him and go "this is racket," and i listen to Anthony Braxton and Harry Partsch for fun, y'know?

i think part of the thing with Kaiser is also that the unpleasant quality of his music is a reflection of his personality...he's notorious across America, and particularly in the Bay Area, for being difficult with venues, soundmen, drivers, and other humans in general, and tends to drip either self-regard or condescension in his interviews and clips. i've actually heard multiple stories from people i know personally about Henry behaving horribly at different times in different cities, and i've never heard anyone describe a positive interaction with him. even Robert Fripp and Jeff Tweedy--one infamously reserved, the other infamously egotistical--have people telling nice anecdotes about them.
