I loved the Volca FM but the 3 note poly killed it for me.

I wish they had a way to do polychain with the volca fm

Only 3? That's slightly disappointing. For what I'd be doing with it I don't think it's a big problem - I have FM plugins and a midi keyboard for anything where I want to go bigger. The project I'm eyeing it up for doesn't really need much polyphony.

The biggest problem I run into with it is voice stealing, but throwing a little reverb/delay on it masks that quite a bit.

Yeah voice stealing can be annoying, but I reckon I could cope. Possibly.

Have been checking out the Drone King a bit and it looks like it's got some nice Grendel-isms in there but with the significant advantage of being more playable (the filter is very different, of course)

Particularly around the 4:30 mark.

Also this thread deserves a bump.

This thread does deserve a bump. I am still FM-curious... And that drone king does indeed look like King of the Drones

I'm surprised you aren't looking at the Digitone considering how much you like the Digitakt. I guess it's on the expensive side. I still really like my DX7; it's amazing once you wrap your head around programming it.

Oh I totally want a digitone. Like, a lot.

But yeah I am just not budgeting for that kind of thing right now. But it's super on the list for the future. :thumb: It is perhaps the best choice, ultimately.

I have the free Dexed DX-7 emulator plugin and it is... too confusing. So I want something a lot simpler but still capable of some level of complexity.

Using the analog four as a recording thing is just beyond awesome. It means I am not using it to even 5% of what it is capable of but also I don't need to be good at music to make shit sound great

Have you looked at the Casio CZ stuff? Phase Distortion additive synthesis can produce results in the region of FM. Programming is still knitting some disjunct aspects to one another, but it seems more approachable to me than the Yamaha stuff.

Yeah I think those casios look pretty cool! I haven't done a deep dive into their capabilities but they're on my radar...

Only thing that's a shame is no midi which I would like to play nice with my other gear

Yeah, avoid keyboards aimed at the home market for sure (unless you're armed with a MIDI kit)

I think all of the proper CZ family members have MIDI from the factory. I know my CZ-101 does, though - it's VERY PRIMITIVE in that space age concepts like velocity, modulation, and aftertouch are ignored. Only note on, note off, bend, and patch change are supported, that said it reverts to channel 1 instead of OMNI, which is nice.

oh damn I thought the 101 didn't have it. Interested very firmly reignited!!! Primitive is fine hahaha as long as I can sequence notes on it it's good enough for me. :excellent:

Yeah. I have and can confirm it's awesome.

Ding ding ding: Digitone.
