I recently got a new laptop, so I will dive into this in the coming months.

My new album Hyacinths is available today. Stitched together over six months, the pieces traverse from saturated, lo-fi waves of looped synthesisers and noise to more sparse arrangements featuring field recordings and mangled public access televangelists. Have a peak if ya got some time.

I played my first gig doing this sort of shit last night. Was good fun and seemed to go down fairly well. I particularly enjoyed hearing my dronez blasting out through a big PA in a club!

Was rocking a fairly simple setup - Ableton with my Launchpad and NanoKontrol, Volca Bass playing one continuous note while I tweaked the filter and LFOs which I ran through my Dispatch Master, and my banjo and vocals.

Played 2 long tracks with a bit of improvised droniness as the transition.

This is really great! Need to buy it once I'm on my computer. Already used up my free plays haha

Sounds awesome! Good to hear it went well. Was it in a proper club or like a houseshow? I'm considering a similar setup, but all that happens in town is house shows and somehow I don't imagine people being into it...

Yeah mad man, there's nothing like playing this shit through a real super fucking loud system somewhere. I'm lucky enough that the handful of shows I've played have been proper venues with mad PA's. There's nothing like really fucking feeling it. I had a similar set up t that, Ableton, launchpad, Akai Midi mix and a drone synth that I had 9 channels of loopers set up for in Ableton. I sold all that and bought a PUSH 2 and an Analog 4 and am trying to get my workflow squared up with all that before the taxman brings me a new laptop and I can start playing live again.

It was in a proper club, in fact, one that happens to be my favourite venue in town. It's cool that they can easily sell out gigs there every night of the week but they still give one night a month over to an experimental electronic night.

I did notice that I was the only one of the three acts on the bill that used a laptop, the other two were hardware-only. What's everyone's thoughts on this? I've never really understood the stigma about using a laptop on stage. If I was going to go hardware-only for what I do I'd have to buy an Octatrack or something like that and a load of effects units, and enough wiring to make my stage setup look like the Hydra to get it all working together, to end up with something less powerful and more difficult to use than a laptop running Ableton. But I suppose a lot of my stuff is pre-prepared and I'm not really sampling/beat-making on the fly.

I started a new piece this morning and am back into my workflow of destroyed samples of all the instruments I have lying around. A Jews harp through time-stretching and a major low end boost makes some serious subterranean drones...

Yeah it's the dumbest fucking thing. Convenience is king. You're still just playing back tracks whether it's ableton or an OT, just in a different way. I'd need a whole OT just for looping (unless there's another 8 track variable hardware sampler I'm missing?) and still need something to play back samples and run Fx. I've always been in the same boat as the only guy with a laptop and while it can feel a bit daunting being the only one, you just gotta fucking own it and if anyone ACTUALLY says anything to you, you can ask em to shout you the $3k to replace it with suitable hardware heh
I've definitely seen more and more iPads in these kinda set ups though. Creepin in. Just rock the lappy loud and proud man.

Always keep an eye on Red Bull's lectures, really interesting stuff happens. I think this will give you some insight on Hecker's music.
This was fantastic. I'm very new to Hecker's music...and to this type of music in general.

I loved his ideas about timing in a track. To break "rhythm" , to break tune, to have flashes ...to not follow A then B then C, etc.

And his concept of brining things back to the ear in his live performances...

Thanks for sharing.

Also, Evo, listened to a couple tracks so far. Excellent. Will support soon.

As I just mentioned above, I'm new to this genre of music. As someone who grew up going to punk/rock shows...my main issue with laptop use in a live performance is that it's not very entertaining to LOOK at. There's less energy in the performer (usually) as far as visuals are concerned. Now, if folks can dial in, turn off their eyes and just listen, well, that fixes it but that's not an easy thing to do sometimes.

Whereas, with hardware, it SEEMS more tangible, doesn't it? I think they get associated with being actual instruments that are being performed on, while you have "just a laptop"--when in fact, the laptop is an instrument...So, it's kind of an archaic way of association.

Maybe it's that folks think everything just comes from "pressing play" , rather than playing a more traditional instrument in real time. Because watching a lone pianist on stage is pretty similar to watching someone with a laptop, but we see their fingers moving, striking....and that gets lost with a laptop...

Hmmmm.

Complex topic to think about.

Absence of visual displays of virtuosity are always go to give folks pause.

I don't think the absence of anything happening on stage is as much of a problem for me because I play live instruments & vocals over what I do. Also, a Launchpad is much easier to operate with one hand on a down-beat whilst playing banjo/guitar than an Octatrack, MPC etc. would be. So yeah, I'm going to stick with the laptop. I don't care if balding men with horn-rimmed glasses are disappointed that they won't be able to pore over a huge table full of equipment while I'm setting up...

Visuals definitely intrigue me. Has anyone done this at their gigs? I really like Godspeed's live visuals and would be all over having something like that playing behind me.

That is an interesting thread.

I'm of the school that if nothing interesting's happening on stage, I might as well be listening to that music at home. :idk:

I know some people who have the attitude that the "musical" aspect is much more important than the "performance" aspect, but you can't really ignore an audience. Otherwise, what's the point of playing music live in front of people? I think there needs to be a balance.
