Conical burrs all the way!

What do you mean by an automatic coffee maker?

This is my grinder:

Probably impractical for most.

Don't get all offended!

I'm guessing he's talking about something like this:

Thanks dude. Wasn't sure if it was the same type of machine as what we'd call an automatic coffee machine.
It is.

My advice is get a good kettle with a decent thermostat and then use a Clever Coffee Dripper. Same sort of coffee but you can control the brew in way more detail and you shouldn't need to replace either for a good while. If I'm drinking "nice" coffee I'll use a metal filter, otherwise I just use Melitta paper filters.

Good advice, goroth.

That's what I'd get if I made coffee at home more often. Some people sometimes like the convenience of making a whole pot with little effort though.

I have a French press when I want coffee coffee. That's just not convenient in the morning. I need a coffee maker for morning coffee that can bet setup and left alone.

Coffee makers seem to last me about a year and a half. I hate the idea of throwing them out all the time. That is why I am thinking about one of the diner style coffee makers. Every part is replaceable, so I could hopefully make it last a decade or two.

Same here.
Right now, I am doing Chemex every morning, but I'm considering getting one of these guys.

I know you know this, but you should get the kind that brews into an airpot:

Not the kind that brews onto a hot plate:

That's the advantage of the Clever dripper. I get up, put the kettle on, and it's got a keep warm setting, so it stays at around 94 degrees. I set the dripper on a scale, with the filter in. Zero it, then measure out the coffee (60g/liter) for whatever amount I'm going to make. The dripper makes at the most half a liter of coffee, but that's enough to get your day off to a good start haha. Then when I'm about ready to drink some coffee I pour in the water, start a 3 minute timer and then 3 minutes later I put the dripper onto a carafe to empty it.

Now that I write that it sounds unreasonably complicated, but it's not at all.

We've got a cheapo Philips at work that does about 4 liters of coffee a day and it's being going good for the past two years. It's their shittest bargain version and it's rad. It doesn't hold a consistent temperature or anything, but if you're just brewing rocket fuel it's awesome. We have one in our rehearsal room as well. HD7448 Google tells me it's called.

My brother in law has a Moccamaster, which is awesome. It has also won a couple of those coffee maker of the year things over here (Swedes drink the second most coffee per capita after the even more depressed Finns, so this is serious business). Moccamaster KB741 is the model you want. It's got a five year guarantee, and if you're prepared to fill in the warranty card you get a 10 year guarantee.

You should!
Their flavour/price ratio is awesome.
Well, I mean, the aeropress doesn't have much flavour. I've never chewed on one long enough to tell. But the coffee it produces is very nice. For relatively little investment.

Whatever.

Buy one.

I've had the blade grinder version of that. Made pretty good coffee for blades and drip, but you have to clean out the whole thing, including the grinding section, every damn time and it's a freaking mess. French press and a grinder is so much easier and better. Mega size the press and get a thermal carafe if you need to get a full pot of brewing at a time.

Oh, and I see it's the glass carafe version in the pic. If you go Cuisinart, go ahead and pick a thermal carafe version. I'm surprised that first world nations still permit glass carafes with hot plates.

You've got Ritual, Blue Bottle and Sight Glass right there in the Bay Area. I'd start there. Plus, there're a lot more roasters in the Bay Area than most other cities anywhere. If you don't find what you like from them, there are plenty of other local options. You guys are blessed in that sense.
