It is SLOOOOOW. In hour 3 right now, I pulled it after two and decided 2 more would be ok. For someone like me who is only doing this at the hobby level, should be fine. Anyone wanting to do any sort of quantity would probably be better off with acids.

Yeah, other than the pcb that ryan is sending you for me, that is. Lemme know what it ends up totaling. You kick ass!

No problem. Gad to help.

So, experiment #2 was.... informative.
After nearly four hours the tub looked like this.

And the etch looked like this-

So, I'm thinking about 2 hours should be right, I'll try it out with the back plate tomorrow. I also learned that sharpie kinda sucks as a touch up tool, I'll be picking up a paint pen, and some photo paper to try to get a better toner transfer. Still pretty cool and I can definitely achieve a deep etch!

a lot of the etching i do is by feel as well. I have a few boners from when i first started. you'll notice most of my etches are actually not deep at all. I get much better detail out of that. the big thing with the acid etching is to not let them get hot... but that reaction is much faster, and way more exothermic. Once they get a little warm, the reaction sort of self perpetuates, and runs away from you. based on looks, thats what I see in that pic. That will be rough to control when you are doing the salt etch.
Sharpie works only when you are doing quick etches. It isn't that thick of a layer, so eventually the ions can permeate through it. I use nail polish, usually the brightest, sluttiest colors I can find. that covers any big holes, Anything like letters that need some touch up are done with the sharpie. I was thinking of getting one of the nail polish pens to try.

Thanks for the insight! Looks like I will be buying some nail polish instead

I think I just let it go an hour or so to long. the first one that was to faint was less than an hour so I have the two extremes to work from.
I polished it up a bit using a dremmel and wire brush and it actually looks pretty cool now

I don't know that I will use it but if someone wants it we could work something out.
