You know what sucked? When people just mixed gospel and country and bebop and thought it was something original or creative.

It's a good thing Rock'n'Roll just fell out of the damn sky...

Yes, I just rained on your cynicism parade...or made it sunny rather.

Well, I meant things that are I guess derivative of rock, but that if you just said rock you might not think of. For example, what I've heard called Black and Roll. That is to say as black metal is to metal. Not a combination of black metal and rock, but rather the same type of move from the genre. I'm pretty sure that has sprung up entirely after 2000, and is still a fairly small number of bands.

I think there will always be musicians able to inject originality into what they do, and not subscribe to the cop out "oh, it's all been done before" belief. I feel like every genre, at some point atleast, was a derivative of another or had a borrowed aspect of another genre, but I don't think that makes it unoriginal. It's what you do with that borrowed aspect or influence that makes the difference and draws the line between imitation and the creation of something new, or new-ish I guess.

exactly.

i think that part of the "originality problem" is also that each new efflorescence of genres is caused by a new level of musical technology, and either the next level hasn't arrived yet or its logical expression hasn't been derived. rock 'n' roll, of course, was based on the then-new electric guitar; "rock" lived on the large live amplification system, the home stereo, and the amp stack; "New Wave" and "modern rock" on the early integrated synths and rack efx; rap after the early days on complex sampling and synth technology, which co-evolved with or was emulated by the electronic dance music folks (Autechre and Boards of Canada e.g. were hip-hoppers and taggers before they were musicians). the next level of technological possibility hasn't arrived yet, or more properly, someone hasn't figured out how to tweak something that's already out there to do something impossibly cool that everybody else will follow.

the used buffer i ordered off eBay, which was supposed to arrive today or tomorrow, just got mailed today and won't arrive until the 5th. so instead of getting to spend the weekend sorting my dual looping setup, i get to wait some more. what really irks is that they sent the tracking info on 6/28, but didn't take in the package until today. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I try not to get caught up in genre labels, but when I hear someone refer to bands like Set Your Goals or A Day To Remember as "pop-punk", it makes me want to punch throats.

It sucks when your gauge of someone's job performance and attitude is part o the deciding factor on someone else's job... Being the middle person in the chain of command is really turning out to be infuriating these days... You try to balance both sides as much as you can, you try to get the upper ups to be reasonable... you try to get those under you to be competent in a timely manner [i.e. keep up with the flow] and have a good attitude but in the end all I do is be truthful

My friend once told me Evanescence was screamo.

Then I broke her nose.
