Yeah, the ESQ-1 was one of my dream synths when I was younger, but not so much anymore. The Kawai K1r is kinda cool, cause the samples are 8bit. I'd also like an E-mu Proteus, just to play the X-Files theme though lol. But, at the end of the day, it's so easy to stack up on cheapies like those, but I'd rather get some nice shit instead.
I don't actually know of other Digitech racks other than the Vocalist series. I have a VHM-5 which is a desktop version of the Vocalist ii, and I like it quite a bit.

If money wasn't an option and I was down for Euro...I would rock every Harvestman Module. Those grooveboxes seem promising as well (with Malekko).

Anyone recommend a synth that will be more fun than a volca keys for playing on my hour and a half bus ride? I'd like to do little mellow tunes ala Florist. Emily recommended one of those Roland boutique junos, but that and the keyboard is a lot for in my bag with schoolbooks.
Right now volca keys seems like the best, but it's a big world and I don't know much about synths

Volca FM. I have one and it's great!

I'd initially steered of the eurocrack, but I'm contemplating once again. Thinking of starting with an Acidlab m303 and a Maths and go from there, using my Minibrute as controller, but we'll see.

Don't forget about the Pocket Operators for commutes! If you're so inclined, you might want to look into getting an old gameboy and running LSDJ or Nanoloops? Then if you don't feel like making tunes you also have a rad gameboy

Nanoloop is crazy cumbersome, my DMG has been in a drawer for years lol, go for LSDJ.

I had been considering that, and I'm still not sure. I like the idea of built in delay on the keys, but I think I prefer the actual sounds of the fm.

I had the exact opposite experience! I hated all the different screens and areas in LSDJ.

My main grief was the way you input a note, like in the square. I'd like some text to display what note is playing, instead of the position of a square within a square. The UI was ok apart from that.
I like trackers, and used Renoise for years.

I have both and they both rock. Keys used goes for like $50 less now. I think I got mine for $110 or $90. You are correct...that delay never gets old! More "high end" synths have applied the same idea of the delay that is more a sound shaper than delay.
The FM has more range though, arpeggiator, chorus. It's great. If you can afford it...get both...get the Keys used though.
In light of all the discussion around "space" they take up virtually none. Mine are on my book shelves!

This is true. That could've been done a little better, but I loved the matrix layout and how easy it was to manipulate things after you'd input a note.

Yes to Pocket Operators. I bring PO-12 to work e'erday for lunch time bash-downs. Fun as hell.

Depends on monies, but yeah. Watching those Maths videos in particular has opened my eyes to the possibilities. I think I'd get bored with just a bunch of fixed-architecture synths, however classic and neato they might be.
