Also I apologize if my comment was off putting Tristan, I didnt mean to blame or infer anything negative against you. I just know how much of a slipperly slope talking about femanism etc can be. Been kinda jaded against people's closed minded reactions lately.
Bros?

Bros most definitely!
No worries, like I said, I was just wondering about it and then my own little mind with it's pride of it's own assumed ability to see different points of view took the wheel in dissatisfaction, it did hurt a bit but luckily there was some De La Soul to lighten things up.

Understood, it's definitely a slippery slope, that's pretty often the case when groups of people try to reach uniformity with other groups of people by emphasizing differences.

I agree! That's especially difficult to do in Scandinavia. I dunno what it's like in Norwegian, but small talk, in Swedish, is directly translated to "cold talk", which I think says a fair bit about Swedes' attitude to small talk. For non-Scandis: we don't say shit to anyone unless it is made overly explicit that it is ok to say something, or unless we are drunk. Then we socialise like normal people.
But it's interesting which things allow you to randomly talk with people.
Children+pram = instant conversation. The younger the children the more people talk with you.
I think dog ownership has the same effect, but I don't own a dog.
I've noticed running/jogging has that effect in some countries, but here running is apparently a solitary activity and you should in no way acknowledge your fellow runners.
@Tris re the total lack of empathy and general manners- it's ok. You're Dutch.

Yeah, the only time I get a greeting on the street is when it's dusk or night time. I'm a big dude with a beard and a hoodie so saying "hi" is the polite way of peeps asking "please don't stab and/or hit me". Then I get closer and they realise they were scared of some sort of cherubic man-child and act sort of embarrassed.

What a great discussion, I like that we can talk in such a reasonable way on here, I see way too many people close down discussion on this issue because they haven't experienced it themselves and lack the imagination to see that other people can have different experiences.
As for the filter, no harassment, I'm just ready for it wheneverr.

Definitely the same in Norway. It's the Scandi way. Even with people you know, it all to often ends in small talk and these robotic questions. I do find it interesting to see what kind of situations make people talk to each other up here. Like you say, walking with a pram or a dog equals friendly conversation. Also, sometimes I have conversations when attending smaller concerts, but that may be the drunk thing. Interestingly, I've sometimes ended up in conversations while shopping for records. Mostly because people seem to think I'm an employee

Also, waiting for shit, like the bus, makes for good conversations in Norway, since we all love to complain. But yeah, mostly we avoid each other like the plague. 1349, never forget.

your question was not off the mark and was perfectly reasonable.
yes, out of the millions of harassments that the video says took place in that famous 10 hour walk, in the 2 minute edit that is presumably all the worst harassments, quite a few of them are someone simply saying hello.
there are also rude macho scumbags making remarks or leering advances, often getting angry and aggressive at the lack of response, and some really creepy weirdos with the unnerving following.
but there is a clear difference between the leering and aggressive intrusions and remarks, and the guys saying 'hello' and 'how are you'.
why they have put them in the video i dont know, maybe there wasnt enough footage of the bad stuff, or maybe its a deliberate attempt to paint everything as harassment.
there is a poisonous aspect to fundamentalist political correctness and all the various isms that it just as oppressive and damaging as fundamentalist religion and politics.
we are all human beings and sharing the same space and at some point there is a negotiation in our interactions. sometimes people offer an old man seat on a bus, sometimes they dont. sometimes people move out of the way to let you pass, sometimes they stand blocking doorways. sometimes people are rude for no reason, sometimes they say hello.
it is confusing and random at times, we have evolved from living in smaller tribes where you know everybody, to living in a world of strangers, endless strangers every day who you will never see again.
again, there is a clear difference between saying hello in a friendly or hopeful way and being aggressive and intrusive.
putting it all in together is just making any differentiation between manners and rudeness meaningless.

This is a pretty good explanation!
People from Cologne (and the rhine region) are like the dutch of germany. Blatantly rude but friendly. I credit it to long-standing trade relations to our neighbors under the sea level. Nothing like anglo-saxon countries though. The friendliness of GB and US people is legendary. Most Germans see that as something to complain about.
