my next door neighbor a few years ago said he had an old Bonham kit he would sell me for 300$ im gonna see whats the deal there. . . .

:full disclosure: im not a drummer but I can program really goddamn good drum beats according to everyone, so its time I learned to play what I can write.

I'm thinking that its not quite the fairest trade either. I sent you a PM if you can answer the questions in there I could tell you for sure.

In my own experience you can take just about any kit and if you learn to tune stuff properly it'll sound like a 5k kit. so I've never saw a point in purchasing top of the line kits cause mine always rivaled the multi thousand dollar ones. same with cymbals to a degree. I used to get cheap then I got expensive ones and now I'm back to cheap/mid grade. I have top of the line for my ride and that's all, everything else breaks and no one has ever noticed one way or another outside of my playing ability.

true, do get something you are thrilled about. But with me it was simple. first just a drumkit, and then with 2 kicks and more toms. then finally one I use with a rack system and I only got it cause of the great deal I got on it and my 2nd kit was falling to pieces as in I was literally setting it up and tying it up with string to hold it together.

so in 14 years I've only had 3 drum kits. don't plan on getting another one till this current one breaks.

I don't care what any person says a drummer's sound is 85% their own abilities and that extra 15% is their gear. cause I've heard great drummers using completely garbage first act stuff and sound amazing.

Filed my taxes today and I'll have enough in the budget for a new kit.

That Dark Horse kit hasn't sold yet and I'm in contact with the seller outside of eBay so I can get it cheaper. If nobody else steps up to the plate between now and when I get my refund, they will be mine.

Even found a snare drum that would make a fantastic match to the kit but its pricey at $450 shipped. Which would leave me with just enough to order my Dunwich Synth Fuzz as well!

I'm thinking about making my own drums, but using solid pieces of oak. I have some that are around 30 inch around so I can cut and sand them down to as I want and when I core the middle have plenty to make toms/snare. still debating if I want to go through all the trouble.

solid oak drums is stone age war drum status. fucccckin do it.

I don't think any drum-kit-esq drums are made this way, nor do I think it would be worth the time/effort to do so. I cant even imagine how difficult it would be to carve/core out a perfectly round shell, since they have to fit mass-produced heads, unless you have some kind of super-industrial lathe?

Ply construction is most common and the cheapest, then there's single ply steam bent and stave construction, which are most often reserved for snares. If you want to start building drums, pretty much every company starts with keller shells and when they grow up, like dw and c&c, they'll get the industrial machines used to craft their own (ply)shells. I haven't checked in awhile, but virtually every other "custom" drum company uses the same keller shells.

If your heart is set on trying it though, i'd start with a snare and go from there. I think you'll find it to be a lot more trouble than it's worth. Stave construction, however, is definitely worth looking into.

It's one of those things I have a huge chunk of oak sitting outside my shop, so working with it to make the shells isn't the biggest problem. not interested in honestly building any drums at all except for this one time. I don't want to do it as anything else but a single event to say I did and that's about it. and part of the reason to do it is because no other drum kit are made this way because it's back breaking tedious work. so it'd be nice to have it just to go yea I did that and that's why they sound awesome.

but yea a snare would probably be first because coring out the chunk of wood would probably lead me to work on the smaller pieces before anything else.

I'm never one to shy away from hard work esp if it's towards something I want to do.

But I got buggered, the oak has been hauled off. I didn't get a chance to ask. There is tree cutting service that drops off their good wood near my shop and then another dude comes and hauls it off to I think he cuts it up for lumber or something. Either way I know the tree cutters and I meant to ask for them to drag a chunk into my shop. So I'll have another chance at some point. I'll just make sure I'll say something first.
