the frequencies created by a bass guitar and the ones created by a regular guitar are completely different...
many bassists use a D.I. for recording and on stage as well but I doubt there's anybody here who'd say that a D.I. is just as good as a real amplifier for their guitar.
just because something works for one type of instrument, doesn't mean that it works just as well on another.

I think basses and guitars are a lot closer in terms of frequencies and what sounds good than you seem to think. A bass is just a single octave down from a guitar, its not that huge of a difference. Whenever you're playing on the D and G strings, those are right in the same range as a guitar.
And most bassists use DI because they're FORCED to, not because any of us think it sounds good. I think it sounds terrible, especially if you're using OD/dist/fuzz. But bassists are not usually given a choice. I have never yet had a soundman agree to mike up my bass cabs. It's always DI, and I don't get a say in the matter. That's one of the shitty parts about being a bassist: soundguys do things the way they've always done them, and they fear any kind of change. But DI is not the same thing as going through a solid-state amp. Solid-states still color your tone. Whereas DI is no coloration, by default.

If you have access to an oscilloscope, plug yer bass in and hit a note. Then repeat with the same note on a guitar. You'll notice that the bass is a much smoother sine wave than the guitar is. This can create a bigger difference in sound than you think.

Well you've had some shitty/lazy soundmen... my bassist uses his amp onstage at every gig. But he's a big Polish dude and it's likely that the soundmen are afraid to fuck with him. You should put your foot down and tell the soundman to do his job and let you do yours. You should be comfortable with your sound so that you can perform your best, I feel... and that means using your own gear (unless it truly is crap).
I wasn't trying to imply that SS amps and D.I. are the same, because they obviously aren't. In recording situations, for example, bass sounds best when run direct. This is a fact, due to the difference in the way bass notes resonate - again, refer to the osciloscope. Recording direct and then re-amping (in one shape or form) is the way to get killer bass tones in the studio. I was just commenting on what Mark said (or what I thought he was trying to say), in equating the Roland JC120 to SS bass amps. I just brought up the DI thing as an example of where things can vastly differ... with DI sounding much better when used with bass than when used with guitar.

I've done this, and I guess it really depends on the bass and on how its EQ'ed. My bass is active, and I usually have the mids cranked up pretty high, and treble around 6, so my signal has a lot of harmonics on it. But a passive bass with the tone rolled off, then sure, its more of a smooth waveform.

They let me use my amp onstage, but only for stage/monitor sound. For FOH, its always been DI or the highway. Believe me, I've thrown fusses about it, and my band always tells me to give in and just do it, because they don't want to create a shitstorm with the venue. And I've 6'2" 225, so I don't think that its a lack of intimidation. It's just close-mindedness. Soundguys just seem very set in their ways (and on a power trip)

I completely disagree with you on this. I don't see how you can say something is "a fact" when it comes to something subjective, like what is killer tone. I personally HATE the sound of bass when its direct, especially when you're using overdrive/distortion/fuzz.

Worst guitars: Any Fender-style guitar over $2000 new. Seriously. It's all wood, plastic, and metal. As long as the neck doesn't warp, any guitar can be set up to play as well as another. Pickups are just wire wrapped around magnets. It's all archaic technology, and none of it is all that impressive. I can see a case for acoustic guitars, but even then...
Worst amps: Modeling. Period. Solid state is awesome, but the new designs sound sterile, generally. I <3 my Acoustic 150. So cheap and so awesome. : D. Oh, and super-expensive boutique Bassman copies. Seriously! Fuck lawyer blues.
Pedals: Same as with guitars. If a Tubescreamer costs $500, it's bullshit. And big-name factory built pedals are getting far too expensive for what they are.
So yeah, there. Cheap guitars rule. Solid State rules. All the ILF builders are awesome. Fuck rich blues guys.

Ok, I'll concede that my use of the term "killer tone" is completely subjective. And you're right as well, when you say that the bass thru a DI sounds horrible with dirt on it. We never record the bass with any effects and only add them after the fact, so our experience differs vastly from yours.
/end hijack.

I own this bass and it's lovely. Although McSpunckle tweaked mine a lot. I have three song recordings to prove it.
