One great option would be to have a little bit of wire with a 9v attachment at one end and an adapter plug at the other. Folks could then use a battery to power their pedal even though the battery clip/space is not built into the enclosure.
This would be for people who prefer to use adapters but want to have a back-up in case stuff breaks or outlets are hard to find or whatever.
It actually irritates me when batteries are included in new pedals. That means I have to unscrew the back, take the battery out, wrap the battery clip in electrical tape, and screw it back on.
I never ever use batteries. I am an AC-power-only guy. You just never know when a battery is gonna crap out. What happens if you're in the middle of a song?
I like it when a pedal comes with a battery cuz I can test it out without looking for, or unplugging something else to test it out. Other then that and the few pedals I have that are battery only, and my e-bow, I never use batteries really.
I always use batteries in my dirt pedals. I dont think i've got a particulary good ear, but i can hear a difference. Pretty much all other types of pedals sound better with AC power, especially Wah's and delays. Cheap, non-alkaline batteries sound the best to me and dont need changing that often......
I went with the 3rd choice... I have a 1spot, so I haven't needed batteries ever since buying one, but I realize not everyone does have some sort of solution like that, and I like to be able to look for bends and shit via 9v power on mass-produced pedals, which I wouldn't even try otherwise...

I've found most pedals sound different as the battery starts to die so never had that problem, did have it with an old active bass though, right pain in the arse that was trying to figure why I had no sound. Never used an active since. I'm definitely a power supply guy these days but I still have a few batteries in my gig bag just in case.
I voted for #4... I think that's the ultimate goal, no more batteries for anything, but in reality I live with them as I worry about the repercussions of removing them from our pedals.
I know that a lot of people still like using batteries but I also know that it just doesn't make sense for some pedals so I'm going to try to phase out our battery usage by 50% or so by not including them in digital pedals that just can't last very long on a battery at all. Some pedals can last a really long time on a battery so I can see why people like using them... totally one of those complicated situations without a black and white answer.
