I really enjoy this boi but I have to say: the same button combo function+play either clears the entire pattern or a specific track depending on if the step record function is engaged and thats.... inconvenient. This might be intuitive for Elektron users but as a newcomer its such a fucking bummer. Yeah there is an undo function, but as far as I can tell if I let go of the function key in between clearing and undoing it doesn't undo and my pattern is lost forever.

yeah. the undo function SUCKS. it's only like 3 seconds? why... why do that. WHY.
i'm not super steeped in Elektron Lore, i had a Sid Station and Machine Drum back in the day (nooooooo thank you), but yeah. that's not a good way to do the clears. i accidentally wiped a whole pattern, had to reload the pattern, and was so terrified it kinda burned in GO SLOW with that. but a comfirmation or different combo would have been muuuuch smarter.
i spent all yesterday working on a setup for Pyramid that i can use as an Init File, i'm probably not going to do a ton of programming on Cycles or most of my boxes, trying to keep that in one central place. the 'Mid.

I can't wait to get a solid rig down to have a centralized sequencer, but in due time. Can't wait to see what you do with the pyramid!

i seriously can't gush enough about how awesome Loopop's video on it was. i had Squarp gen 1 when there were no good tutorial videos for it and... ugh. i think about 50 times i sat down, tried to write a simple pattern, got nowhere, stuck in a WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS EVEN DO loop for a half hour, gave up. worked with loot i understood, got annoyed at being ignorant of a pretty piece of gear, repeated.
watched his vid, it all clicked. i spent about 2 hours last night working on Instrument Definition Files, which are super easy text files, the amount of time was playing with what works for how i want to use loots, then wrote patterns in bed with the wifey. she has a few trashy shows she likes to binge on, and the Squarpy is so fun that i was having a blast learning how it programs and all the crazy things (MIDI Effects are an amaaaaazebutts idea) it does, even when i didn't have it hooked up to anything.

I also printed off a copy of Drum Programming by Ray F Badness (what an awesome name!). Planning on reading through that while acquainting myself with the Model:Cycles. It's going to be a good time!

Why would you not want a sampler for drums?
Like, not to get battle to the death over it, but I feel like a limited synthesised drum machine vs. whatever you want is always going to lose out here.

Are you implying Volca Sample/Model: Samples as a better alternative to Cycles/Volca Drum, or are you thinking the Volca drum is sample based machine?
In my experience limitations yield the most interesting results. I love sampling, it's my favorite part of the OP-1. Would love to get a Model: Sample to pair with the cycles. If you sampled multiple kicks from the Cycles onto say a Model: Sample, and sold the Cycles you would lose access to all the FM modulation that is possible on the cycles' synth engine. Its LFO, trigger conditions, and step modifications of those FM parameters would be unavailable in Samples. Sampling is a super useful tool but it doesn't do everything.
