Re: Time for a new "main" OD/distortion
Boneshaker is rad but I found the distortion flavor was a little too raw and unrefined for what I wanted to do with it (lead tone). Boosting the front of a tube amp with it sounds great, but on it's own I thought it didn't have enough hair on it. Also, since the EQ is so crazy there is a lot of potential for bad sounds. I ended up replacing it with an Elements since it has a lot more distortion, and it is versatile but the EQ is easier to dial in.

I really love the Electronic Audio Experiments Dagger for that type of sound.
I'm curious... any link to that Fender Twin Reverb custom 15 tube amp? What it is?

Agreed. I had both. The Boneshaker is more of an overdrive. If it had a single tone control limited to a more useable range, it'be easier to use imo.John Matrix wrote:Boneshaker is rad but I found the distortion flavor was a little too raw and unrefined for what I wanted to do with it (lead tone). Still, for the money you can't really can't complain I guess
I often see people mistake it for a poor man's The Elements. The Elements is a high gain distortion that can get either fuzzy or tight or whatever inbetween.
That's actually why I flipped mine. I want a pedal for each type of sound I'm using, in a set and forget sorta way. A compact 'swiss army knife' type pedal is no good to me when it comes with just one switch/preset and no way to store/recall at least three different settings. Besides, seperate fuzz and dist peds don't cost me a helluva lot more than one The Elements.

Seconded on the Haxan--the 250 has roots in the Blue Clipper....Chankgeez wrote:hangwire wrote:Going through to a Fender twin Reverb 15" speaker amp.I totally approve!

I don't really know you or your playing well enough to make an informed recommendation.![]()
I like the Sarno Solar Flare a lot.
Jero also builds great pedals. I've got a Haxan he built me that's based on a Dan Armstrong Blue Clipper. Highly recommend that if you're into those kinda distortions.

One of my favorite pedals that I can never make work. I always sell it and I always want another one.repoman wrote:Driving Notion

Maybe it's your set up? Maybe the pedals isn't made to be a true od? Maybe I have no idea because I never tried one? lolneonblack wrote:One of my favorite pedals that I can never make work. I always sell it and I always want another one.repoman wrote:Driving Notion

I think i like the idea of the driving notion more than I like actually playing through one. I can't ever get them to sound quite right either.
As for the topic at hand: Harmonic percolator (my favorite has been the Dirge Even Anguish), SSBS Mini, maybe Jwar's Total Spack Vibes? (I really want that pedal but i have enough dirt). I'm actually running a SSBS Fuck and a ZVEX box of rock being pushed hard by my diamond comp and I get a pretty good range of "90's indie" to "2000s post-hardcore" tones out of it.

Right now I'm running a Fuck always on and slamming it with a Mini for distortion, then running the whole mess into an Unpleasant Surprise. Great mix of gnarl and clarity.
Has anyone mentioned the Fairfield Barbershop yet? It's the only thing I've considered swapping out my Fuck for

That sounds like a great lineup, neon
I'll have to try something similar minus the Fuck (thinking maybe something else fet-based)

Re: Time for a new "main" OD/distortion
I don't use any of the OD's you guys do. LOL. Well, minus the Elements I guess.
I like to mix up my overdrives. Some days I'm using the Total Spack Drives, other days I use my B7K, or my Drive Maker.
It just depends on what sound I'm going for. I like to a few varitions of each type of dirt. I'm weird like that. I can't just have one. I have to have options.
Which brings up something like the Source Audio Aftershock. I haven't tried one but all the demos make it sound like it'd be a killer options.

Re: Time for a new "main" OD/distortion
this is a great cheap suggestion - and the Blues Driver is in the Colorsound Overdriver family, a few different takes on that might work for you.Yadig wrote:Boss blues driver. Sounds better unmodded and gets pretty filthy for Sonic youth stuff which I also use that and the mooer rat in turbo mode for those sounds.
First suggestion is Basic Audio Futureman - total Swiss Army knife. Has bass and treble controls and the gain ranges from boost to drive and even into fuzz, and sounds good all the way through,
and I think it's one of those pedals that works well with about any amp.
Maybe partying will help.
