Tom, you are still talking about things that exist on some spectrum still. I think I got confused about the topic here. I was meaning there are no new inventions. Meaning a sound that has not previously been generated in any application.

That's why I listed Eventides Undulator because as far as I'm aware, there hasn't been anything similar to that.

All the pedals you listed are amazing but they have been done on some level somewhere. VSTs or otherwise. Even feedback generators were previously done in VSTs.

I love the innovation obviously and don't want it to stop! My argument is perhaps not fit for this thread when I thought it was? I don't know.

Oh and btw, I love my Freqout and it holds a special place in my heart.

And even that is just a combination of things:

"Undulator is a classic Eventide effect that combines two delays, two detuned voices, and a FM modulated tremolo. By turning up the Intensity you can increase the dry/effect ratio."

Everything is derivative of something else. Somehow, some way. Nothing was invented out the ether by sheer miracle without an influence. No person or idea is an island.

However, plenty of innovation in some categories and builders. Some next level stuff out there that often includes merging new ideas with old or even just executing ideas better.

Agreed -

A lot of the interesting stuff on the market is adding multiple layers of processing to a source. A pedal might break up audio into pieces, then filter the pieces, and then delay or pitch shift the pieces in a linear or non-linear manner. Its pretty cynical to boil down that very unique and "new" effect to "oh well its just based on delays and filters, nothing new there."

It may be true that all effects are based on a subset of processing methods but the same can be said for food. You could spend years going around the world and eating and you would never say "oh there is no new food" just because you've had all the ingredients in other dishes in the past.

I don't disagree with you. We are making the same point with different words.
