What @crochambeau touched-on about tube types, cascade clipping and gain-staging is essential to consider, as some tube types are far more compressed while others open and airy. Circuit type will make for flattering or flubby response.
@waltdogg the "volume difference between 50w and 100w amp is only about 3dB" reminds me of similar summations, another one being "by increasing power 1000% you increase perceived loudness 100%" (10:1)
To which I've come to say "not necessarily"
You need additional variables to calculate said differences (more accurately anyway).
How low of a load can they drive while remaining stable?
Consider a 50w amp with 16ohm load comprised of 1x12 (16 ohm speaker) or 2x12 (8 ohm speakers)
Consider a 100w amp with 4ohm load comprised of 4x12 (16 ohm speakers) or 8x10 (8 ohm speakers)
Power and load specs covered but how sensitive are we talking? Swapping out drivers rated at 88dB, 97dB, 103dB will change the game all over again.
Obv series wiring as needed to properly distribute the load over an array. Series-parallel is also going to affect power & performance.
There will be massive difference in max SPL and SQL between each system. Resonant frequencies shift, cab design is another cluster of variables to finesse.
