Re: New Sleep record chit chat
I don't even necessarily hate weed puns/references*, it just seems like that's only been a Sleep post reformation thing if you exclude Dopesmoker. Which, regardless of intent, was never even the public name of the album until a solid decade after I first heard it.
*Ok, I actually DO hate weed puns/references in music...but I mostly overlook it for bands that I really like the music and it's inseparable (Weedeater, Bongzilla, etc.). However, I just don't want a giant pot leaf on a shirt or a sticker, so I've never bought any Sleep merch, even though I've liked the band a long time and they were semi-local to the area I grew up.

Yeah, back when I used to be really into TMR the only way I ever got split records was either through the Vault or that one time I visited Nashville that somehow coincided with a band making a live record there.infamousalien wrote:I guess I'm lucky I live near Third Man Records and picked it up right from the store then.jrfox92 wrote:Hey, I wanted a place to complain about Third Man Records and their shit handling of selling their split colored records..

I tend to find weed-doing-references and weed puns kind of boring. I just don't care about it.Corey Y wrote:I don't even necessarily hate weed puns/references*, it just seems like that's only been a Sleep post reformation thing if you exclude Dopesmoker. First couple listens were pretty okay. Into the riffs. Don't think I was listening to the lyrics too much.

So much this.infamousalien wrote:I really like the album though. I think it has Matt Pike's best solos.
I also find this album to be infinitely better than Jerusalem/Dopesmoker.

This record slays and for me has a pretty high repeat value.
Music out on all streaming services and bandcamp and what not.

I agree with Corey to some degree though (even if the original dopesmoker came out in 2003, just a few years after Jerusalem on Rise Above), they've definitely embraced the "need to make money" aesthetic with their merch. I quite liked the original reunion tour shirt, though. The David DAndrea one.
Overall the new songs remind me a lot more of Shrinebuilder than Sleep. That's all good, I quite liked Shrinebuilder.

Re: New Sleep record chit chat
Shrinebuilder was fucking great.
Pike's solos are fucking ridiculous on this one.
The D'Andrea Om shit was so good. I need a replacement shirt from that tour as well.
Look, they missed a lot of years touring and producing content together at their aphelion. They would have crushed everything in their path and there may not have been Stoner/Doom in the abundance as we know it. They may have created the thirst for Sabbatian Gospel by disbanding, or at least intensified it. Can anyone really blame them for cashing in on that when a) they own that fucking territory and b) they've toiled so hard in other bands that are, in their own right, fucking amazing, and have probably not gotten the recognition (and $$$) that they deserve?
More to the point, who the fuck is listening to Sleep for lyrical content?
It is not the brutal D&D, cryptic, conspiratorial, sci-fi lovefest of HoF.
It is not the oblique and cerebral metaphysical mantra of Om.
It has always been a little Dada-esque and trip into juvenile mythologies of unhip.
Who cares?
If you tell me Giza Butler is sub par because of Al's singing, prepare to be destroyed because that song is like somebody just turned fucking groove into a critical building block of the universe.

Unpopular opinion time. I don't really like Matt Pike. I'm more into Al than anything. Matt seems like a creepy trailer trash kind of guy and when I saw High on Fire live, I couldn't wait for his set to be over. I know, I know! OK! I get it ILF! I don't care!
Now where the fuck can I buy the LP? Other than that ridiculous ebay auction?

The sad thing is I only know of 1 in the entire metropolitan area. I guess I'll call them. Almost all of them closed in the early 2000's.D.o.S. wrote:Try your local record store?
