If you went with a Dwarfcraft offering, I would recommend an *old* Shiva to get the best gross sound. The newer ones (all printed boxes) are going to be a little smoother sounding (for lack of a better word).
There is a reason that Wata only uses a very old Shiva on her board. We have sent her all of the other variations and they aren't as good as the first.

That's the one I have! I just assumed the she fuzz was similar enough.
Shiva is wild indeed.

kbit wrote:My favorite octave up fuzzes on bass are the Tone Machine and Boss fz-2, although the fz-2 isn't that harsh. The tone machine is though

The FZ-2 is, and has always been, one of my favorite fuzzes. The octave isn't as that promiment, a real superfuzz clone sputters and spits more, but it's not as gainy and agressive as the FZ-2.
Other than that, I dig most FM-2 based circuits, or Ibanez Standard Fuzz clones.

I'd say anything using a transformer octave. They get brootz.

Stop making me want stuff, Louise!
My newer She Fuzz does get pretty abrassive, but now I want to try an og.

The Guyatone TZ-2 produces a pretty vicious upper octave but I don't know how typical it is of a Superfuzz style circuit. I've got a Tone Machine clone too and that's more nasal but not as aggressive.

Isn't the Guyatone TZ-2 supposed to be a pretty accurate Superfuzz clone?
Always wanted one, cause they're so cheap, and I don't have any recording/touring ambitions anyway, so the lack of true bypass or a solid enclosure don't bother me. They're hard to come by though :/ I do have a little green compressor from that same series/era though, surprisingly good sounding and quiet compressor, especially for the money.

Is the "Old" Shiva the one with the diode lift switches for the octave and the stomp toggle for starve mode ? They are pretty rare if that's the one ..

I actually had one for a bit and I remember it being really fucking cool. I might try and hunt one down again. Especially with how cheap they are

Dibs on the first one you track down that happens to be in the EU instead of the US?

The newest version (cream background with a lotta warrior hair in the art) is only slightly less gross than the OG. The components are almost exactly the same as V1, the exception being one electrolytic capacitor is reversed for greater build reliability (like, 99% up from 75% or so). I believe Boris are using Dwarfcrafts that are built on stripboard, which does wonders for nasty fuzz tones, not so much for reliability. Also they take approx 5 billion hours to build, so fuck some stripboard for production units.
