Hey, I want this thread on the front.

I've been seeing some people using a volca sample to do some cool shit, and I've been using mine for simple sampled drums and shit, but not for anything super hype or anything. Anyone else use a volca sample to do some actual cool shit?

cuckoo made a nice video to explain the differences between the octa and the digitakt.
I think the digitakt strengths are ease of use, easier learning curve, less menu diving... and around February it should get full overbridge support to be fully integrated in ableton.
as of now the filter seems a bit limited, and you can't backup your work but many hope they will improve when a fw update will be released.

I'm an octatrack noob, while it's kinda easy after a couple of vids to get going for regular stuff, it feels very deep as a machine and I get discouraged at times.
the slider is super cool and destroying sounds is fun

Not that you shouldn't, just asking. The OT or the digitakt brings stuff to the table imo, but for sampling you're pretty well covered already. Are you looking at an end of chain sampler, where you can bring it all together?

Well I guess yes I am, except perhaps the volca sample, which I'm finding less and less useful as I keep putting of making a good sample library for it

Op-1, microgranny and OT are quite different in sampling things and playing them back however.

I run a pretty complicated pedalboard setup, the core of which is having 2-3 parallel chains of fx, each with its own looper and subsequent loop manglers. I don't use the loopers to create any kind of regular "beats", I play keys & other instruments live and use this setup to make different textural/melodic/harmonic layers on the fly that evolve and are a backdrop to me and the rest of the band. I'm totally happy with this setup from a functional perspective, but it's big, heavy, and expensive.

So every few months I look at the octatrack and wonder if it could do everything I need in one little box. But I haven't really seen any demos that show it being used in this way. They all seem more beat-focused, or show it being used to construct a song or sequence. And in general I don't like menus. So my interest in the OT always wanes. I even flipped through the user manual a bit today to try to get a better sense of what the workflow would be to do what I want, but without a unit in front of me that didn't really help.

I basically want to be able to hit one button to record whatever I'm playing on the keyboard, hit a button to stop recording, then have a few effects at my fingertips to manipulate the loop. And then be able to do that with a few other independent layers.

So does anyone here have experience using the OT this way? Or is there something else that does what I'm looking for that I should look into?

My best guess is that you can certainly do this with the Octatrack (at least it looks like it should be able to), but mostly it looks like the effects are going to be pitch and time based. You could also look at the EHX 45000 and their new massive one the 95000.

It really depends on how you're trying to "manipulate the loop" though.

to be honest, the digitakt seems a lot easier, but I'm thinking this will be a pretty boss-ass centerpiece of an electronic setup. So far I have sliced up one preset sample. it took about an hour.

Thanks - that's a good question. I'm most often trying to disguise the loop, so it has the same (or complementary) harmonic content but doesn't sound like the same notes being played over and over. So it's often a combination of pitch/time/glitch/delay/verb. Right now the three parallel chains are:

EHX 16SDD > Infinite Jets > E2D
CT5 > Particle > Clarinot
Ditto > Seraphim > Moog 104M

Some of those (Infinite Jets, E2D) have some distortion functions, but that's not as high a priority. And I change them up pretty frequently. So a bitquest or Superego+ often gets subbed into one of those loops for variety.

Sorry I haven't finished this thread yet but do NOT buy the OP-1 as a sampler. Ok I shut up and read now <3 Followup: a friend has the Octatrack and it's a nice piece of kit but like all older Elektrons it is absolutely menu divey, like *way* moreso than a Blofeld. Of course this is because it has a lot of features in a small space. They are awesome and sound great (unlike the OP-1 sampler). Digitakt I haven't gotten to play with yet. Obviously a smaller elektron with a bigger screen sounds like the purrrfect combo. Followup 2: Personally, I use a windows sub-itx pc with an i7 inside and a portable USB video monitor. It's a little pricey (~$1000+ for newer models) but coupled with a cheapish ($175) sound card, it can run multiple fx chains on multiple tracks at the same time it does a thousand other things.

I barely use my PO-12 and yet I still want all of the Pocket Operators. They're fun for random mini jams. The PO-33 looks really cool too.

Still think the Digitakt is where it's at. I love playing with mine, its really back to basics as far as making music goes, and you can quickly be where you want to be sound wise. Super quick workflow is so much fun while making beats and now with the update out midi works great as of so far. Making it the center of my electronic setup with no DAW. Also digitakt + behringer model D is a badass start for bass and drums/samples.
