If you're looking for an octave fuzz with powerful mids, the Maxon Ether (Univox Superfuzz Clone) may be worth considering. I have the Water (Ram's Head Big Muff clone) from the same series, and the parametric EQ approaches the threshold of Boss HM-2 chainsaw mids.

There are also some newer Bigtone Music Brewery fuzzes with parametric mid controls:

Another clusterfuzz vote. Just a super versatile tricked out tonebender, it'll do velco zippery stuff as well as meaty overdrive tones. It won't get into superfuzz or muff territory, but as far as tonebender/fuzzface sounds go, it's all I'll ever personally need.

If you're after something more superfuzz flavoured: The Boss FZ-2 can still be found cheapish and comes with a powerfull eq. But in that regard, if you don't mind spending a bit more, the Maxon Ether is indeed a step up when in comes to good superfuzz clones.

It has been a while, but I figured I would let everyone know where I landed on this. I got a Necromancer in a trade and damn I loved it. On bass it was the tone that I always hear in my head when I think of hardcore or noise rock. It didn't have as much volume as I thought it would, but I never had a chance to find out if it was loud enough for my bands setting because I traded it on a whim for a Shigeharu.

From my singular point of view (which is constantly, gradually shifting) the Shigeharu sounded better than the Necromancer on guitar. While I'm happy with where I ended up you better believe I'll be getting another superfuzz-based pedal some day because it was clearly given that name for a reason.

I was on a search for a mid-heavy fuzz for guitar after using a RAT for years in my current band. I've also found the Shigaharu after trying a few others. I love this pedal, and it's got a lot of great sounds in it.

What did you use on Yu?

Good fuzz with mids.. big cheese.

My dizzytone clone has mucho mids and still sounds really phat, but not muddy.

mine's not gated at all, and I use very low-output pickups so I really don't get on with gated fuzz coz I, like you, need that feedback

Oh really? What particular Dizzytone do you have? I know it's easy enough to build or mod them to be 'ungated', but I didn't want to devalue the two I had (a Jext Telez and Ghost FX). Both of those were very gated.

mk3 bender might be a good idea. I have a lucifer rising (sort of mk3/4 mixture i think?) and it's very middy with the guitar's volume up full, kinda muffy when you roll it back
