This was an awesome setup. The RE501 is gone now. EP3 is a personal holy grail, still makes everything magical.

I'm always using tape for my stuff, usually cassette but I recently had my Akai reel deck repaired so I've been using that too. One of the common practices I do is to record a guitar track on a tape deck as a secondary mic/source when I'm recording a take, and then manually splice/edit it in my DAW to sync up to the digital source, so I can blend it into the mix and get another layer of tonal variance into the song - it's also a necessity to edit it cause the belts on most of my cheap machines are pretty slow and everything runs at its own speed. I use 4-tracks with tape loops when I'm playing live that I blend in too, which is always fun. What I never really understand is people who go to lengths to find vst plugins to emulate 'tape' sounds, yet have no interest in experimenting with it for real. To me having the physical medium at your disposal is so enjoyable and rewarding, but I guess it depends on your aim.

Thanks! It was. Also surreal. I used to split the signal out of a DL4 and run the 501 into my Marshall with the EP3 into a Twin, so a dual mono setup with separate echoes and reverb. Inspiration for a bunch of recording. I never took both out for shows, only one at a time. At this point in my journey I wish I had the 501 again because it would be useful, but the prices are ridiculous. I did realize that I am less lazy with maintaining one machine than two, and the same goes for guitars too.

That is a painful reminder that I lost my small handheld tape recorder. It had multiple speeds. I used to take it to class in college. In fact, most of why I showed up to one philosophy class was to hit record and then fall asleep, tried to listen later. But this tape recorder probably got thrown away on accident. It kills me because I never lose stuff and this would be perfect for some uses nowadays with the multispeed adjustment.

I do a lot of tape and have a serious 'analog vibe'
That's one of the corniest, hippy-dippy things I can remember reading. It does make me wish, though, that people introduced themselves at parties by reciting their Web biographies.

"Hi, my name's Todd. It's nice to meet you. I do a lot of tape, and I have a serious analog vibe."

First test with the Ondemagnetique OM-1 cassette tape synth running through the Vocu VTE1600 tape delay and some added Reverb from a AKG BX20 plugin. Can't wait to try this out with other sound sources recorded onto the cassette and with other effects!

You can get rid of some of that portamento effect by playing the notes with your right hand before touching the sound pad thing with your left hand if that makes sense. It is completely unintuitive and difficult to play that way, but it gives you some more sonic options.
