edit:
also are they all like this, missing some soldermask? where were they fabbed if you don;t mind me asking?
No just 2 were, they're from DirtyPCB, for the price I didn't mind just a few were like this compared to OSHPark, but the rest of them were solid, you can see the 2nd bad one on top left but that was for my own personal build.

I really have no pref of perf vs. vero... when I look inside a pedal and it's really nicely done, I generally tend to be more impressed than if I see a PCB.
That's really nothing more than just an "ooh, handmade" novelty opinion, though. But yep, it's disconcerting when you open one up and it's just floating around.

My brain tells me smd is ok but my heart says it's lame.

WHhat if you use an SMD to Through Hole adapter?

Some component types are essentially unavailable outside either SMD or very rare old stock. Stuff like dual gate FET, inexpensive matched pairs or Si/Ge hybrid transistors.
I'd say embrace it.
Vero and perf boards are huge time suckers. I started with proto-board layouts, and going full PCB has made it possible to maintain certain build types beyond a single session (or "batch" as the OP likes to say).
I don't know if that has anything to do with BBR though.

If I slip a hot-dog and a cookie into the case will you listen with your stomach?

hotdog cookies don't need to be a thing, now they are in the lexicon.

That sounds like marketing talk from someone in the pedal aesthetic industry.

If I ever had a problem with SMD it evaporated when I got Moogerfoogers. If they can make their gorgeous analog sounds with SMD, then I am just fine with it. I have never heard lusher, more analog tone magic pedals in my life.
