Did you try the MXR Bass Studio Comp? I've heard good things about that one.
that was the first comp i pulled out of he display case. didn't compress my signal enough even at the highest compression ratio.

but it's all good. the search is over. musicman emailed me the passive schematic for my bass so i'm just gonna attempt that and get the fairfield for guitar.

They're different but I like the Markbass Compressore just as much as the FEA opti-fet. Except for its size but it's so much cheaper! It's gooey but as a limiter it can also be pretty fast. on bass + guitar. But those are the only ones I've tried that I like. I think they're both better than the Symetrix 501 or FMR RNLA rack units

DOD Milkbox has been great for me as someone who doesn't really "get" compression in context. I turn it on and mess with it if EQ isn't doing enough for my clean tone, or if an octaver is sounding weird etc. Use it as a boost sometimes too, lots of volume, though plenty of noise with it. I think they're still cheap?
